12. I respect the forest and I am in awe of the forest --
I feel safe in the forest...safer than I would feel in the suburbs.

2. Sorta-Other: I love the forest. And the desert. And the grassland.
And the peaks. And the coasts... :)

3. I put yes, but it isn't truly FEAR -
I just don't KNOW landscapes with lots of large trees very well. It does not feel familiar in the way the rocky, brushy, more open landscapes of chaparral country or the semi desert grasslands or even true deserts do.

5. When I was a kid I played in a pine forest.
Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 03:46 PM by Avalux
The lowest branches were many feet above my head; the ground was covered in a thick blanket of pine needles and it was so QUIET. I loved it there, would take a book and sit and read for hours, by myself.

I definitely do no fear the forest, unless maybe I was lost and couldn't find my way out. But that's why you always take a compass...

6. I grew up on a goat farm next to the forest.
On the side of one of the tallest mountains in CT.

I spent so much time in the forest that it is impossible for me to ever be lost in any forest; I can find true north (and by extension E, S & W), I know to follow running water if I'm unsure of my location and I know how to track, orienteer, trail-blaze. I can identify edible roots, berries and mushrooms. I'm capable of hiking 15 miles over rough terrain or 6 in adverse weather.

One of my favorite games is to get myself lost, really lost, like If-you-were-this-lost-they'd-be-sending-out-rescue/search-for-you-in-48-hours lost...and see how long it takes me to get home. Mind you this was in NW CT, it's entirely possible to walk all the way to Canada 260 miles away and never see civilization.

I am at home in the forest, much the same as the Pequot and Mohegan who lived there 300 years ago. You can call me Natty Bumpo.

10. That's intense, I'd like to have your skills one day.
I was lost on horseback for about 3 hours about two months ago. I used common sense and my sense of direction to get out. It's very mountainous terrain here in Pecos NM, on top of being densely forested.

17. I live in the forest, and I feel differently about it at different times. Sometimes it feels very
welcoming, and sometimes it feels like it would rather that I were somewhere else. Sometimes I know bears or wolves are watching as I'm walking through it, and sometimes I know better than to head out into it. I do love the forest, but I respect the hell out of it, too.

19. I live in the forest and I fear one main aspect of it.
The way it burns.

21. The forest I know best isn't forest fire territory. Though some forest must
have been burning nearby because the lake we were on had water bombers coming by to refill their tanks with water.
