so the wife totaled her car this morning
'07 Impala.Tore it to shit.
She's fine thankfully.Bruised and battered..possible broken pinkie, but all in all in good shape.

The new cars are amazing at how they handle crashes. She hit an oil patch in the rain on the interstate during a left turn in the road.Car slid towards the right guardrail and she turned wheel left. When the tire hit the rumble strip it got traction and she hit the left guardrail head on at 60.The front end crumpled just like it should and took the impact. She walked away with bruises and a possible broken pinkie from the death grip she had on the wheel

3. thanks
 Yeah she's at the hospital with her sister just getting checked out to be safe.(Her sister works in the ER and will get her through fast)

To see the car it's amazing what they do now. Both front wheels are against the back of the fenders, hood shoved back a foot. The car did EXACTLY what it is supposed to do and probably saved her from serious injuries or worse.

2. wow... i am so happy for her. the bummer of a car is insignificant when accident is so serious
at such a speed. i have my accidents at 5, 10mph. lots of damage, with little consequence to self. the cost way outweigh relief of safe.

this one... just glad she is ok.

Edited on Sun Sep-26-10 01:47 PM by backwoodsbob
it was one hell of a lick.Car is barely recognizable as an impala. It's tore all to shit.

Thankfully she insisted we get gap insurance when we bought it.

She's fine is what matters.she'll be sore for a few days though

On edit.Car is not insignificant.I love what's left of that car.It possibly saved her life.If it wasn't on the wrecker lot locked away I would probably go hug it.

5. Very good to hear that her possible injuries are relatively minor.
I hit a patch of black ice one winter on I-80 in Nebraska and landed in the median without so much as a scratch on my car or body, but the same cannot be said for my psyche. That experience _really_ shook me up and is always with me, especially when I have to drive "in weather."

Sending good thoughts to Mrs. backwoodsbob. Give her a hug for me, wouldja?

10. google Impala airbag
it appears there have been some problems with them.
I'm so sorry that your wife was hurt, but so glad she didn't sustain worse injuries!
Scary to realize she was going forward the same speed as her car and was halted by the seatbelt. It's weird that the airbag didn't deploy, it would have at least spread out the area stopping her from going forward and her ribs and clavicle wouldn't have taken the brunt of the force.

 to you, and an extremely gentle  to your wife

21. If the airbag didn't deploy it's highly likely
that she also has whiplash as well. Unfortunately those symptoms tend to show up the next few days after the accident. She may not notice as much because of the other injuries.

14. Bob- it's good that she will be hospitalized for a few days, just in case anything develops
from the heart and chest injuries and possible clots, etc.
She just won the lottery - that could have gone very much worse for her.

Be glad she is still here.
All the bset to your family.

17. Glad to hear she's OK.
Sorry about the car and I hope everything goes smoothly for her. I got rear-ended a couple years ago and my car took it like a champ...I went in for some PT massage on my neck because of some mild whiplash...but the other car was a total loss.

Sending you both good thoughts!

It's good that she's going to stay in hospital for a bit. Such a worry for both of you.

Cars we can replace, loved ones we can't.

I'm so thankful your wife will be alright.

 for both of you. Good thoughts for a speedy recovery.

23. Very good end result.
I'm glad everything performed as it should have... energy-absorbing guardrail, energy-absorbing car structure, energy-absorbing airbags.

Back during the Bicentennial if this had happened I bet she's be in traction.

It's shocking how quickly things can happen - just reading the post makes me less inclined to take my wife for granted, I can imagine how you feel...

(And on the metatopic: deleted sub-thread? What deletion-worthy comment could be on a thread like this?)

run out and do that car shopping now (and any other 'unnecessary' shopping you've been putting off)... ;)

30. I learned the hard way that broken ribs can result in collapsed lung later.
like a month later.

So be aware of any breathing problems now or down the road and have them checked out ASAP.

So glad the the Mrs. came thru as well as she did.
and that YOU are taking deep breathes also.
