Iams Smart Puppy shortage or recall ?
Made an emergency run to get more puppy kibble. I have been feeding Iams Smart Puppy Large Breed since that is what the pups were on when I go them. They were hungry this morning and I was completely out so crated them and drove out to the store and the shelves were bare. Had mostly everything else. Note on the shelves said there was a "supply problem". I went for Iams Proactive Health hoping that is the closest thing. Went to another store, same deal.

It tastes different. More of the corn oil flavor than the Smart Puppy, and the rice seems more prominent. Hopefully it won't set off their digestive tracts but going from one chow to another without a transitional blending period is always a bad idea. This seems like a good time to start them into more carrots and chicken. I'm tired of gambling on recalls and unexplained unavailability.

Can't get Iams on the phone until 9am and can't find any news online so far. Anyone heard anything?

1. I don't know, but my friend mentioned the same thing about their cat food.
He had to buy an alternative cat food, because his Iams cat food hasn't been stocked in 2 weeks.

3. the fact that there is no explanation makes me nervous
I can really think of only one reason why pet food gets pulled.

5. Update: Got Iams on the phone
they are out of one of the ingredients that goes into the puppy chow, wouldn't say which one, and absolutely refused to estimate when they would be shipping again. 3 weeks?

So I have to switch food.

6.  I hope your puppy's tummy adjusts to the new food.
I know it can get messy.

8. I have 2 -- littermates who are the love of my life

..we'll see the new food is fairly close -- Iams ProActive -- so maybe it won't be too bad. I am making up chicken, carrots and rice now because if we are adjusting to new food then we might as well see if they can handle fresh. They have had carrots with no problem and lots of fresh chicken stock (with no onion).

Thanks for the hug; will relay to the pups.

7. My dog got an upset stomach
when I fed him Iams several weeks ago. Diarrhea everywhere, so I just threw the whole bag out. Switched back to Purina ProPlan without any problems.

This makes me even more suspicious.

9. mine were touchy for the last week or so
we go through 20lbs a week so the last week was all from one bag but they weren't that bad. Made the mistake of giving them rawhides about 3 weeks ago -- THAT turned them into little twin Linda Blairs.

12. dry dog food -- yes
It comes out of the same mega factories that produce processed human food. Most of it tastes like Fritos Corn Chips and chicken broth. I wouldn't feed them anything I wouldn't put in my own mouth at least once.

14. IAMS / Eukanuba Samonella recall
I saw a press release that IAMS and Eukanuba are being recalled for samonella contamination. It's not all their products - but I don't know which ones. I DO know that they've closed 2 plants which is a little scary. I'm not going to risk it. The folks at PETCO recommended Science Diet as a substitute because the formulas are similar.

15. Plant Renovation
The guy I spoke to at Petco said that IAMS and Eukanuba were both experiencing shortages because three plants have been closed down for renovation. I switched to a Nutro variety at his recommendation and it seems to be going well.
