How many here are familiar with the music of Louis Moreau Gottschalk? |
|
How long have you known about him and his music? What are some of your favorites and who is your favorite performer of his music?
I have only been familiar with Gottschalk for a little over a year. I am purchasing the cds performed by Philip Martin. I love performances by Ivan Davis and Cecile Licad as well as Martin's.
Some of my favorites: Le Mancenillier; Hercule; Bataille; Columbia; Manchega; Souvenir de Porto Rico. I honestly like every piece I have heard so far. Some of them are simply incredible, like Murmures Aeolians; Les Chutes des Feuilles; and Solitude.
Anyone?

11. I wish we had a good classical station here. There is one close by, |
|
in Little Rock, but the frequency comes into conflict with the surrounding hills and the surrounding "shrills" the religious stations. Enjoy.

14. We're very fortunate, and one of the few remaining, I think. |
|
A fairly large listenership base, DC area = Maryland and Virginia, including all the public employees! I recently moved to an 'exurb,' 60 miles from DC, and the station has an additional spot on the dial, which gives us reception that avoids the problems presented by the surrounding hills.

My mother was a real devoted listener of Gottschalk. I like everything I've heard, but honestly my first love is classic rags -- Joplin, Lamb, James Scott etc. and I have listened to them more than to Gottschalk. I do have a pianist friend in Italy who plays Gottschalk beautifully and has a couple of pieces up on youtube. I can't capture a link to them right now but his youtube user name is fum8ma2

12. I love ragtime, too. I am impressed with Gottschalk's protorags. |
|
There is a passage in the first Ossian ballade that is very raggy. Take a listen to this for another neat precursor (especially at the end): http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rOjKqHBrMnY&feature=relatedHope you like it......

Gottschalk is the king of the Hot Springs Music Festival. I think they have many Gottschalk releases. I think they are on the NAXOS label.

9. Bingo! Two summers ago Richard Rosenberg conducted Gottschalk's |
|
Night in the Tropics and I was hooked. I'm sure I had heard of him at some point, I'm old as the hills, but this time it "took". Thanks to Rosenberg, Frank French, Ivan Davis and Philip Martin (Hyperion) I am a converted Gottschalkian. I was shocked to learn that Rosenberg is out of the HSMF but I wish him well. Very well. He changed my life. I have one of the Naxos recordings and plan to get some more. Arkansas frequently ROCKS.
