Alice Cooper, Bon Jovi, etc. up for Rock N Roll Hall of Fame
Rock and Roll Hall of Fame Nominees Announced

Bon Jovi, the Beastie Boys, Neil Diamond, Alice Cooper, Donovan, Tom Waits and LL Cool J are among the 15 artists nominated for induction into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2011. Also on the list: Chic, Dr. John, J. Geils Band, Darlene Love, Lauro Nyro, Donna Summer, Joe Tex and Chuck Willis.

These are the first nominations for Bon Jovi, Donovan, Alice Cooper, Dr. John and Mr. Diamond; some of the others, including Chic, Donna Summer and Darlene Love, have been nominated numerous times but never made the final cut. (There’s hope for them, though: this year the Stooges finally made it in after having been nominated seven times.)

The inductees will be announced in December, and the 26th annual induction ceremony will be held on March 14 at the Waldorf-Astoria in Manhattan. Artists become eligible for nomination 25 years after the release of their first single or album, and the awards are voted on by more than 500 music professionals.

A notable omission among this year’s nominations: Kiss. Last year its fans got their hopes up when, after years of being snubbed, their heroes finally got a nod. (Those hopes were dashed when Kiss lost out to Abba.) For the Rock Hall, that might be a risk: four years ago hundreds of members of the Kiss Army – a k a fans – protested at the Hall of Fame and Museum in Cleveland, with slogans like “Thou Shalt Not Delay the Induction of Kiss” and, perhaps most frighteningly, Kiss costumes.

Hey, I dig Alice Cooper, Donovan, Bon Jovi, etc. as much as the next person - but aren't we pretty much out of truly "ground breaking" type acts for the HOF? From now on it will just be semi-popular bands who have been around a long time.

3. Thank you, that was going to be my comment
All of those groups are much suckier than Rush IMO. I think it should be named the Commercial Appeal Music Hall of Fame, because that seems like what most of the entrants are. Commercial.

14. Well like the OP said, they're getting to "semi-popular bands who have been around a long time"
So Rush can't be far behind.

33. 30 years of touring and still selling out the largest arenas?
There was quite the large crowd in Virginia when I went a couple of weeks ago. I'd say consistently drawing 25,000 people to a show on a biannual basis (they tour every other year I think) qualifies as more than "semi-popular". :)

34. Monster truck rallies still sell out the largest arenas in Virginia.
And for much the same reasons. And audiences.

15. Don't "Fame" and "commercially successful" mean kind of the same thing?
I mean, they really should open up a "Rock and Roll Hall of Great Talent and Artistic Purity," but they haven't yet.

7. Interesting that it is Alice Cooper the solo act
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 11:59 AM by CBGLuthier
as opposed to the old Alice Cooper group, the band he had most of his hits with.

Until Tull gets in the place is meaningless. And it will still be kind of meaningless even then.

12. I think they're considering "Alice Cooper" both solo and as a band the same thing. Really
his band mates through the years have always been his supporting act, so I don't think they are considering this "solo" vs his "band" days. I think it is just all about "Alice Cooper" in all of his variations.

And sure it's a shame that he's not in as he was at least doing something different and has a lot of great hits, but then he should have probably been voted in 10 years ago. The whole thing is just stupid and I dont know who they're going to be voting in in another 10 years - The Spice Girls I guess? ha haha

Alice Cooper was my first real rock concert ever in 1990. I was 13 years old and went with my dad. The guy next to me on the other side offered me some of his pot. Ah the memories!

21. No, once upon a time there was the band Alice Cooper
Edited on Tue Sep-28-10 06:09 PM by CBGLuthier
They were a fine band that recorded more than a few albums.

During this time, the lead singer, Vincent Furnier changed his own name to Alice Cooper. He went solo in 1975. Since then, yes it has been a succession of hired musicians but before that there was a band and they were actually pretty good.

I saw Alice Cooper starting with the Welcome to my Nightmare tour that was his solo debut. He is a great showman and probably belongs in the hall for the influence on the theatricality of Rock.

but that original band really, really rocked.

17. In the early 70s...the original, actual Alice Cooper BAND was "truly ground breaking"
No, it wasn't the first time theater played heavily in music, but the themed albums and accompanying stage shows were pretty damned original. After "Muscle of Love," when Vince Furnier kept the "Alice Cooper" name and the rest of the original band split, he did the concept thing for a while but eventually just started spewing out a 50-50 mix of headbanging and power ballads.

Bon Jovi, on the other hand, broke no ground at all (other than pimping themselves, in Springsteen's shadow, as a "Jersey Band"). Jon Bongiovi had a cousin in the industry which helped him circumvent a lot of the pesky details most up-and-coming bands have to deal with (like having actual "talent").

By mid-1982, out of school and working part time in a woman's shoe store, Jon Bon Jovi took a job at the Power Station Studios, a Manhattan recording facility where his cousin Tony Bongiovi was co-owner. Bon Jovi made several demos – including one produced by Billy Squier – and sent them to record companies but failed to make an impact.

18. As schlocky as they are, Kiss really were a huge influence...
in that they made lots of kids want to play guitar and be rock stars (maybe just like the...uh...Beatles did)
Thankfully, many of those kids moved beyond Kiss as an artistic influence.
They really do belong in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame (for what that's worth)

young Rock and Rollers.

I suspect both Todd and the band AND myself will all be long dead before that happens.

24. If I could vote for five of them, it would be these:
Neil Diamond: yes, he peaked early and stayed around much longer than he should have, but he wrote some incredibly good music in the 60's.

Donovan: He was the epitome of coolness in 1968, but musically he was avant-garde. Pretty much everyone knows and loves one tune or another by Donovan Lietch. Why not?

Alice Cooper: School's Out. Elected. Eighteen. Only Women Bleed. Plus what's been said above. Alice Cooper is a legend.

Tom Waits: universally hailed as one of the finest songwriters of his time, Tom Waits defines his own genre. I am not sure I'd call him a "rock" musician, but he's certainly a genius.

For the last, I regretfully reject the Beastie Boys. TBB led a wave fusing heavy metal with rap. Consistently inventive and accessible, the Beasties are one of my favorites. But I can't reject the J. Geils Band, one of the premiere live acts of their time.

25. Why do they always include artists who are not rock and roll?
That's what pisses me off. It's not the pop music hall of fame or the popular bands hall of fame or the best sellers hall of fame--it's the fucking rock and roll hall of fame. We can argue plenty about which rock bands should be included, but I have little respect for the institution when its name is meaningless.

I'd have Bon Jovi in for their eatly output up to & including "New Jersey" (personally my favourite album was the debut in 1984, with tracks like 'Runaway').

Since then they seem to outdo themselves with the blandness and bandwagon-jumping of every subsequent album....
