6. Back when I was young and stupid (which is what I was before I became

old and stupid), I had a little red ragtop bug, and I decided I'd see how fast I could drive it down a Texas highway. In those days, this was fairly safe, in regards to unwanted meetings with state troopers, since the state didn't like to issue speeding tickets unless the Feds were breathing down its neck and threatening to cut off highways funds for non-enforcement of the national 55 limit. From the accident point of view of view, it was NOT "fairly safe," since at the bug's top speed, the steering wheel shook convulsively. Anyway, I got the poor little thing a notch about ninety, and in a bit over 2 hours rattled down something like 200 miles down the interstate. The highway wasn't empty by any means, and I didn't pass ANYBODY at all. That's not because I was driving with traffic, either: nope, EVERYBODY passed me -- and not slowly, either. There was a WHOOOSH! about once a minute as somebody blew by

7. I had my 68 Galaxie fastback up over 120 at 3 a.m. once on I-95 in MD.

I just wanted to see how fast she could go. The needle stopped at 120 but it was pretty clear I had gone beyond that. A 4-lane highway isn't quite so lazy to navigate at that speed!

Anyway, I blew past a state cop on the side of the road. I don't know if he even turned on his lights because I rounded a bend right after that. I'd spotted a mile marker and knew I was about 2 miles form my exit - quick calculation=less than 30 seconds away from the time to start slowing down. I thought a mile would be enough time to slow down to a safe speed - um, wrong. That exit ramp freaked the hell out of me, but I did manage to clear it without crashing. If the cop called in for interceptors, I imagine they were ten miles down the road about the time I pulled into my apartment parking lot.

I've still got her. My grandfather bought her new and she's safe in a storage area now. There are a few things she needs to pass inspection and unfortunately that's not my top priority at the moment. I'll have her back on the road one day, but not at that speed.
