Everytning you wanted to know about prostate biopsy but were afraid to ask.
My PSA has been on either side of 4.0 since January, so when the last one was 4.6 my urologist recommended a biopsy.
OK.
:-(

It took about 15 minutes for a 12 point biopsy.
Really painless.
The most 'uncomfortable' part was insertion of the ultrasound probe.
But even that wasn't bad.
It was about 1/2 inch in diameter and well lubed.
Concentrate on relaxing your sphincter.

Doc did a 'block' first, with Zylocaine injected into a nerve into the prostate (as I understand it).
No pain there.
The prostate doesn't have much in the way of pain receptor nerves anyway.

The he took 12 biopsy samples.
He said you'll hear a 'click'.
Yep.
And a little pressure, but NO pain.
Not even a pinprick.

You will have blood in feces, urine, and semen after.
My question is How Much?
Anybody else done this?

The biopsy needles penetrate the lower intestine to get to the prostate.
I've been through 2 pairs of skivvies.
DON'T FART immediately following this procedure.
The outcome may be surprising and messy.
Get on the john first.
:-)

Oh yeah, he put me on a course of antibiotics the day before to cut down on the chance of infection.
You're going THROUGH the bowel to get to the prostate glad after all.
Cyprofloxacn.
The same stuff they gave workers in D.C. during the post 9/11 anthrax scares.
And the nurse gave me a shot in the hip of some other antibiotic prior to the biopsy.
Infection isn't that common, but is the most common possible side effect.

4. Oh, Lord, I'm squirming just from reading this.
I hope all the samples turn out negative so you don't have to go through that again.

7. Semen will be red-brown.
Don't remember much change elsewhere,
compared to that. In fact, I'd actually
forgotten the warning and momentarily freaked.
Hope you get good news.

9. ah, sorry you are going through this
as to amounts I bet it won't be much (and you should have asked!)

I recently went through a cringe-worthy sounding procedure on reproductive parts as well, was not much blood at all, for only a few days.
