3. "Folks"
I HATE HATE HATE HATE HATE that word. Especially from politicians who use it in every fucking sentence, as if saying "folks" instead of "people" somehow makes you more "connected" to the pleebs you're trying to get to vote for you.

5. Meh. Word banishing is too much like censorship IMO
Are there phrases that irritate me. Sure (the corporate ones I often hear at work for example) but as I said, even the concept bothers me. Anything I dislike, I just avoid using. Just like on TV if there's something I find offensive, I don't watch it.

6. "Game changer"
Used waaaaayyyyyy too much. "This is a real game-changer, Bob!" Oooh I'm so excited. :eyes:

"Reboot" when referring to remakes--I don't care whether the definitions are slightly different. If you're redoing a movie that existed before, it's a remake. I don't care how much you mess with the mythology. Reboots are for computers.

"Nevermind" and "everyday". Before Nirvana's typo and Toyota's misguided ad campaign, respectively, each of these was TWO WORDS. Now they're mashed together and nobody cares. And yeah yeah I know "English is a living language" and all that crap, but I'm an editor and a proofreader and it's my job to ensure the print medium adheres to standard grammar and spelling rules, dammit!

I am glad that the banished words for 2010 include "czar" and "in these economic times"--both of those drive me crazy (along with the variation "in this economy"). :banghead:

8. "at the end of the day"
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 10:37 AM by ElboRuum
I just despise cutesy phrases like this when there are COMMON SINGLE WORDS in the English language that do a better job.

Case in point...

We can argue about this until we're blue in the face, but at the end of the day, we all just want to put all of this behind us and move forward.

Compared to.

We can argue about this ceaselessly, but ultimately, we all want reconciliation and progress.
