New cat problem
Edited on Thu Sep-30-10 11:29 PM by newcriminal
OK, I'm a pushover. My youngest saw a cat at a festival up for adoption from the humane society. I said noway, we have enough animals. She starts to cry, and needless to say the cat is on my chest as I write this. She's a beautiful sweet thing, and she has decided I'm her favorite. The problem I am having is she tries to nurse from me. (She is over a year old, not a kitten) Anywhere on my arm or chest. She purrs, kneads, licks and makes a sucking sound. While I am happy she likes me so much, I would prefer to keep my shirts dry. What do I do.

Oh, and I have called the vet we are going next week, and I ask him as well.

2. Some cats will keep doing this throughout their lives.
My ex's cat, who must be, geez, about 15 now, used to do this on his favorite blanket--and I cat-sat for him a few months ago, and he still does it.

My 5-year-old cat does this--and the funny thing is, she didn't start until I'd had her for almost 2 years. Took her that long to love me, I guess.

It's something kittens do when they nurse on their mothers. They knead her belly to get the milk out. Some adult cats do it when they're feeling affectionate. I don't think you can stop it without being cruel. They're just expressing comfort and contentment. The best thing to do is to get a really cheap fleece blanket you don't care about, and put it over you and let her go to town on that--while talking to her and petting her and gently moving her away from sensitive organs.

Anyway, in a nutshell, this is not abnormal behavior. Far from it. (She may have been weaned too young, but there's nothing you can do about it now.)

5. Withywindle's fleecy blanket idea is excellent.
I've never known a cat who wasn't a fool for fleece.

3. Some cats have that addiction- google 'adult cat nursing'
The calico cat seems to be looking askance at the white 'nursing' cat ...

4. We had a kitten that did that to another of our cats for ages
We got a little boy about 12 weeks old. Once he settled in he decided that our other 14 year old male was his mom. It was funny for the first few weeks then Sam's nipples started to get raw... He kept at it for Months nothing we could do and Sam didn't seem to mind. He grew out of it over time. We still laugh about "poor Sam's nipples"

7. I have 2 cats that have done that
the kitten does that when lying on my kid's velour robe, and the other cat stopped doing it years ago. It's just showing it's content. Thank you for adopting this baby, enjoy

9. She WUVS you. Might as well get used to it. I've never found a cure.
I've had a few kneaders but only one real drooler. I eventually kept a hand towel by my favorite sitting spot for when he got happy. He kind of fell for the towel after a while and I became superfluous. I was a little jealous, actually.

10. First, you quit whining about it.
Second, thank the Goddess Bastet that one of her subjects has chosen you to be the object of her affection.
