2. It gets huge ratings
I don't know why, but it does.

People don't like to admit it, but if Syfy didn't air wrestling they'd never be able to afford airing cool shows like Caprica, which are fabulously expensive to produce, but really don't get huge ratings.

Or at least that's the defense Craig Engler has to offer at least twice a week on Twitter when someone complains.

3. I just miss the days when channels were distinctive
Edited on Sat Oct-02-10 07:46 PM by pokerfan
When science channels aired science programs, music channels played music and science fiction channels aired science fiction. We probably should have seen this coming when they changed their name to Syfy.

4. Capitalists ONLY care about profit, nothing else matters to them.
All the media companies care about is getting eyes to see the ads.

5. They've played "wrestling" for years.
Even before the name-change.

I'm guessing it has to do with their owners (NBC, I believe, as they also own all USA Networks, of which Sci-Fi used to be associated.) Consider, too, that when they made the name-change, their "excuse" was to garner a "broader" audience, i.e., dumb it down to the level of wrestling fans

Back when Babylon 5 (and later, Crusade) was on TNT, fans of TNT (again, for the wrestling) switched off when the science fiction show came on, while fans of B5 switched off when their show was done. Network Suits don't like such things, because their minds work in black and white only. There is no gray (or compromise) in the world of network TV ;)

7. SmackDown
Retaining its Friday night timeslot, SmackDown made it's live premiere on Syfy on October 1, 2010 and there's been talk about having live editions of the show on WWE PPV weekends.<6> According to the Los Angeles Times, the move sees Syfy paying close to $30 million for the show as opposed to the $20 million paid by MyNetworkTV.<7> Due to the move, SD is being advertised on Syfy and now more frequently on its sister network, USA Network.

8. I told hubby they should just change the name to theWrestling Channel
Since their made for SyFy movies suck and the other nights are taken up with wrestling.

OK, they do have some good series, but they need more good stuff - even if they go back to re-runs of old classics. They used to run old science fiction series that only had a season or two in the can, not enough for syndication. I loved those and miss seeing them.

10. It beats most of their movies, and wrestling's ratings are among...
the highest on cable, so it gives them the bucks to make Warehouse 13.

11. here is my solution:
-break your teevee into a million pieces

-throw it in the garbage

-cancel the cable

-reclaim your mind and your life

-enjoy!

it's scary at first, but hang in there!

12. I have thought about that.
Edited on Sun Oct-03-10 09:50 AM by RandomThoughts
Although that would not correct primary or secondary issues.

Basically it would just be staring at the walls all day long. Might decide to do that, maybe not.

I could get rid of TV and Internet, but maybe they might add some fun and thought to someones life, and if not someone elses, at least it is thinking and feeling until correction is completed and other options are more viable.

I still have my life in that I wont ignore what needs to be done in order to just have some fun or beer and travel money.

Although if it did end up that I was just staring at walls, I still think there would be a way to make a difference somewhere.

13. when i first ended my television addiction
i went to the library and took tremendously long walks.

the first few months i felt lost, but slowly, slowly, slowly, the world filled out for me. my thoughts became more coherent, i didn't feel spaced out all the time, i could sit and focus on intellectual tasks for extended periods of time, my writing and reading ability improved, and i sought out the company of my fellows.

so, give it a shot! you might be gratified by the result.
