Feeling pretty blue. I just had my cat put to sleep.
That was hard. I was blubbering like a baby.

We brought him home, had a funeral, buried him under the peach tree. Girls were crying, my daughter gave a very nice eulogy, remembering all the good times with him.

I haven't had to deal with death and loss much, yet. I'm no good at this.

And I don't want any more practice.

We'll miss you, buddy.

1. My dear Common Sense Party...
I am so sorry for your loss...

It's always hard, but remember, your buddy relied on you to relieve his suffering. He couldn't do that for himself...

It's the final act of love.

I always cried when we had to do that too...

Nobody is ever good at this; you aren't alone.

Time is the great healer, and I hope that your great memories of life with him will sustain you...

4. I'm so sorry. It is gut-wrenching to lose a kitty.

I always say that the only good thing about losing a precious cat is that you can help another one (or two). So many kitties are in shelters waiting for homes.

6. Sorry to hear that. I know how difficult it is to lose a furry friend.
In the last 3 years my husband and I lost 4 cats to old age: the first died in my arms, the second and third had to be put to sleep, and the most recent passed away at night, laying beside me in bed. They were all painful to lose, but having to be the one that makes the decision definitely makes it more difficult.

Now we have 2 young guys whom we love as much as the first 4.

Cherish your memories. It does get easier with time.

7. From Wallace Stevens...
That would be waving and that would be crying,
Crying and shouting and meaning farewell

I'm so sad for you...I know the feeling, and it just plain sucks.

9. Ah, I'm so very sorry
It's such a painful thing, indeed. Safe passage to your kitty. Hugs.

I've had a kitty die in my arms, but had one put to sleep earlier this year, and it was incredibly painful. Just the knowledge of it being about to happen made the whole day before so very long, and our last moments, with her purring and looking at us, brings tears to my eyes when I think of it now.

Peace to all of your family.

16. I'm sorry for your loss, and happy that you loved him.
Sadly, in this life the two go hand in hand. You and the family take care of one another and it'll become a sweet memory. Peace to your little buddy.

17. Thank you to EVERYONE here. I appreciate your words of support
and sympathy.

The house just seems kind of empty--even though there are 5 humans here--without our little guy.

Opened up a can of corn for dinner. I expected to see him come running, hoping it was tuna.

21. I am so, so sorry.
It's hard. It's always hard. It doesn't get easier with experience either, because every individual is irreplaceable.

Know you did the right thing in easing his suffering, though, and I'm glad your whole family participated in the funeral.

It will hurt for a long time, but gradually you'll be able to enjoy the good memories again. Just remember, you made that all-too-short life a happy one. Consider how many animals never get to experience the love and security you gave your little guy.

Before too long, another one will come along needing what you and your family have to offer. Don't think of it as a replacement. Think of it as something the cat you just lost would want you to do. (I think there's a network in Cat Spirit World; when a good home opens up, the cat who has moved on to the next world will send a recommendation.)

22. I am so sorry too
I broke down at the vet's office when my cat was put down. They understood. It was unexpected.

I think I cried all my tears that day and for a few weeks after. I had my cat for 22 years. He was my best friend.

Two months later I passed an animal shelter. I went in and started crying. A cat was pawing me through a cage. I adopted her that day. It helped mend my heart.

Cry if you have to. Don't keep it in. And seriously, if you can, think about getting another one. I promise, you will fall in love again. I did.

24. Your cat is now chasing butterflies. Funny thing, when he catches up with them he gives them a kiss
and sends them on their way.

He's happy beyond what we as living beings can measure. Whatever pain he felt is gone, and he will forever thank you for giving him relief from that pain.

My ex-wife and I once brought a puppy home from the pound. A week after we got him home, he had to be put to sleep because of PARVO. We cried like babies. Then we went back to the pound and brought home another puppy. THAT puppy had such a sweet disposition that he actually brought us together in ways and for reasons we could not explain.

I get weepy when I think of the first one, who taught us what it feels like to lose a loved one, and the second one who taught us how much joy a pet can bring.

Get another cat, and shower it with love.

Always remember that you've provided a place where a cat can feel warm and safe. I believe that's what makes you human.
