1. I'm not yet 30 and I see the differences already. |
|
In one of my part-time jobs I work with a lot of teenagers and you know I realized a bit back?
No one wears wrist-watches anymore. They use their cells to check the time.
But for me I can't remember the last time I left my house without a watch on. It's like my wallet, keys, smokes, phone. Something I automatically check for before I'm out the door.
I'm less then ten years away from their group and I already see so many differences.
Culture moves much faster then it used to.

:D If you had a watch with an alarm on it, you were the real shit on the block!

8. Funny that wristwatches were invented because pocket watches were seen |
|
as unpractical.
Now people are going back to the pocket watch (via cell phone)
Me? I don't want to have to look in my purse or pocket when I want to know what time is it. I don't plan to ever stop wearing my wristwatch. Much quicker and practical

13. They were for combat soldiers. WWI put an end to pocket watches. |
|
Train conductors kept them around for awhile, kind of a badge of office. Out of tradition older professional men held out, but once the suit vest disappeared, so did the watch.
Military will continue using wristwatches; as you say, much quicker and practical.

19. I didn't know that, Very interesting, I can see why professional men didn't want to change |
|
Pocket watches seemed more elegant and classy. Now, for the ladies, I can't remember seeing a woman looking at a pocket watch. Maybe women only began using watches after wristwatches became fashionable.

21. I agree. Pocket watch is more elegant. I'd like to see them come back with black tie. |
|
When women did wear watches beginning around the turn of the 20th century and they were in the upper level work force -- (for women, teachers, nurses, clerks), they wore a broach type watch pin to the jacket or blouse. Some were quite elaborate albeit small and for nurses another badge of office. As memory serves women's wrist watches started to show up after WWI, but often looked more like bracelets. Probably wasn't until WWII when the plain jane utility wristwatch became common place.

30. I've been wearing a pocket watch for about a decade. |
|
I stopped wearing a wristwatch because you can't wear "adornments" when you work in kitchens or bakeries as I did way back when. Thus, I got so used to not having it on, that when I could again, it felt too weird to use. So, I went to a pocket watch and never looked back. I have yet to be in a situation, though, where I have to know the time RIGHT NOW!!1! and don't mind taking a few seconds to get it out. If people can't wait a little bit, then they didn't really have that big a need to know the time anyway ;)
Sure, I could use a cell phone, but as I wear my pocket watch every day and often leave home without my phone...
Oh, and I would love to see the tie excised from fashion forever! They're nothing but an oxygen depleter :P

6. My kids know about the Beatles, and a lot of their peers are really into the Beatles. |
|
I've seen kids wearing Beatles t-shirts and kids performing Beatles songs at school concerts. My daughter and her friend were singing along to "Eleanor Rigby" the other day because they'd learned it in school.

9. Yeah, my daughters learned it in school too. |
|
In their last school they had an excellent music teacher that taught them all kinds of music. They did a big unit on the Beatles. My daughter knows more of their songs than I do! It's a bit strange.

7. How old is she? does she know about The Beatles? |
|
My 17 year old niece is a big Beatles fan. So are most of her friends. BIG fans, as the kind of fans that know every word of every song.
The funny part? She was born and has lived all her life in Honduras.
Around here (Miami) is not that unusual to see kids wearing Beatles Tshirts
Which means I'm NOT old, I'm not!:P

I've found him to be very popular with teenagers and twentysomethings around here. He's certainly one of my son's heroes. In fact, out on a drive on this rainy, chilly afternoon we passed under an overpass where two young men stood holding a giant banner that proclaimed "IMAGINE PEACE". I teared right up.

she does a whistle (which she actually learned from the micowave) that sounds like the star trek sound effect. i took her to visit a friends kindergarten class, and they liked the trick, but they had no idea what a phaser was. yup. old.

31. I attended Paul McCartney's concert at the Hollywood Bowl |
|
in March. There was a little kid behind me, couldn't have been more than 5, who had a little miniature Sgt. Pepper jacket on. The dad was telling the entire section that the kid is obsessed with Beatles' music - knows all the lyrics and can sing all the songs. He had the kid demonstrate by asking us to name a song and having the kid sing it. Too cute. Introduce your daughter to some of the music, and before long she'll want to know more. Nothing today compares.
