Who here likes cider?
I've recently discovered pear and and apple cider and genuinely like it.

Does anyone here like cider? Any favorite brands? I have been drinking Woodchuck but want to branch and try other brands.

1. Local, fresh-pressed is best.
Our neighbors make it. It's wonderful hot!

9. Is it non-alcoholic?
Edited on Sat Oct-09-10 09:23 PM by Sanity Claws
I assume it is if your neighbors are making it.

Do you know the difference between apple juice and nonalcoholic cider? I don't.

I should have said I recently discovered alcoholic cider. :hi:

16. Yes, they have an orchard and a cider press.
I think apple juice is filtered, but cider is not. That's why it's cloudy. (I've heard that the worms and all are pressed, but I don't want to think about that part! LOL )

I have never had alcoholic cider (not a drinker). :hi: back

23. Let it sit for a week or so, and it will be alcoholic
You are lucky that you can get fresh, unpasteurized cider. It's difficult to come by here. When I do find it, I buy two jugs of it. One for now, one for later, when it gets a "kick" to it. The only problem is that if you let it sit too long, it becomes vinegar. I guess that's not really a problem if you use a lot of apple cider vinegar. :-)

33. For non-alcoholic, get Martinelli's Sparkling Apple Cider
my sons loved it when they were kids and called it Apple Spider.

2. Strongbow cider is pretty good
It's a British cider, and apparently pretty popular there.

The first time I drank hard pear cider, I thought I'd died and gone to Heaven...

4. I love apple cider as long as it's cold.
I don't really like any hot drinks except for hot chocolate once in a while. I usually buy cider at a local stand, fresh is always best.

7. you've never had appel cider before?
Huh. It's a fall stapple.

I never particularly liked it much. Never liked ginger snaps much either. I tend to not like overly flavorful food.

14. I've had nonalcoholic apple cider before
from a bottle. It tasted the same as apple juice -- not worth writing home about.
I was referring to hard cider. If you haven't tried hard pear cider, treat yourself. It really is good.

18. regular cider doesn't taste like apple juice
I've never had hard cider since I don't drink alcohol but it would probably taste a little stronger I'd guess. Regular apple cider is pretty damn strong tasting... not at all like apple juice. Frankly, I never thought it tasted much like apples at all but more like rotten apples... or how the smell of rotten apples would taste since it's not like I've ever picked rotten apples up off the ground and tried eating one.

If you want to try regular apple cider that tastes like it's supposed to try Ziegler's. Ziegler's is really near where I live, but I'm pretty sure they ship all over the country now.

I'm allergic to pears, so I'd have to abstain from trying pear cider.

8. Love the cloudy, non-hard stuff, cold and fresh and strong,
that you get at a farmer's market or in some supermarket refrigerated sections.

Not the kind in the jars in the juice aisle. That just tastes like bad apple juice.

17. There are lots of orchards around here, and all of them press cider - I love it,
but I get stomach pain from drinking more than a small glass of it. Also, I'm avoiding fruit juices lately because of the sugar content.
But cider is great stuff.

29. Ooh, I just tried a great pear cider....
Sir Perry! http://dryblackthorncider.com/sirperry_home.html

It might be as good as my beloved Strongbow, and that is saying a lot. From the website: "Sir Perry is made in the traditional English style, using 100% fermented pear juice. Not to be confused with American pear cider, which is made from fermented apple juice with pear flavoring added later."

30. Woodchuck is excellent
I can't stand pear cider. All I get anymore around here is Hornsby's, which is okay (the amber draft, not the crisp apple). Blackthorne is nice, but very hard to find. My favourite is Woodchuck, though.

President John Adams drank hard cider at every meal, even breakfast, and he lived a long, long time.

31. My Grandfathers were hard cider experts
Gramp discovered that when sufficent hard cider was put in the cellar, the wood furnace seemed to feed itself...

Granpa liked to pour a guest a glass of hard cider, and watch them try to figure out how to get out of the farmhouse kitchen - with 11 identical doors leading off from it!
