And if you say "meh" then you really mean that you want to make sweet, sweet love with Bill O'Reilly.

I love how Wickus is just this woosy slimeball who by the end of the movie turns into a total unleashed badass...great actor. Interesting movie!

5. Aside from football, the things I've watched recently are Wallander and a few
episodes of Farscape. District 9 was good, but "significantly better"? Meh...

Alright, fine, but I'm on top.

And it won't be sweet.

A better than average movie, but I was bummed to see it devolve into what was basically a standard action movie by the end.

Yeah, I loved it. Mixes the techniques of "The Blair Witch Project" with the mocumentary style of Christopher Guest and the "Humans are jackasses" message of, well, every recent sci-fi film I can remember, to come up with a less pretty version of Pocahontas. What more could you want?

52. I debated telling you this, I really did...
I was torn, but realized that it shouldn't make any difference. That was a body double, not Judi. If you see the film again, look at Judi's arms, and then compare them to the naked butt persons arms, they are not the same. Is this what your "reasonable facsimile" comment meant to address?

I've known for years, probably since the first time that my (then) young mind realized that you don't see her face in that shot, not even in profile.

Well, it's a movie chock full of special effects, so why not? If I can believe that those scorpions were real, then I can believe that Judi Bowker's butt was real.

A fairly provocative story that devolves into just another SF-actioner.

There's nothing worse than a movie that lacks the courage of its convictions.

I thought it was pretty funny, but I was in dire need of some humor and mindless entertainment. The mood I'm in, District 9 wouldn't do it for me - I can't handle sad, dark or depressing right now. And please, no gory violent scenes.

44. That movie is not about Racism in my view.
Edited on Mon Oct-11-10 07:21 AM by RandomThoughts
It is about spiritual influences around people.

And it uses the alien metaphor for that comment.

However some people think that spiritual is about someones race or household line.

There is a delusion that each race is a spiritual faction. Also many other concepts try to say that who you have sex with defines spirituality of a child. There are some people that thinks some body function like reproduction defines the spiritual aspects of life.

I understand honoring ancestors, but a person can be far more, or far less then any action or thought an ancestor had, and much of that is choice of learning and belief.

Although if you can get people to think in racial terms on things like that, they can fight over nothing, and if someone fights over nothing later they can get a worse guilt trip thrown at them when they see that.

Also, if you believe that spiritual is by blood lines or race, then the most successful person is based on how many children they can have, and that would be the only criteria for successful spiritual existence. It is ridiculous, but a delusion that many believe.

Do you really think the spiritual world exist with the only goal of reaching a generation able to get pregnant many times, or to get many people pregnant? That is a bit silly. And does not match any evidence over history based on sizes of families.

Or is Octamom and the Duggers the pinnacle of civilization and spiritual existence? Is that what some are saying?

50. Why in the world would it need to be subtle? Is racism always subtle?
And given the setting, it isn't simply a metaphor for racism; it's clearly a metaphor for Apartheid. Was Apartheid subtle?

Beyond that, the film is more directly about Wikus' ironic redemption, in essence becoming a better human being by becoming thoroughly nonhuman.

The idea that every story must be a brand new thing is a bourgeoisie notion derived from hyperactive Campbell-worship. Is Forbidden Planet crap because it simply recycles The Tempest? Is West Side Story garbage because it's a rehash of Romeo and Juliet? Is A Thousand Acres lame because it's a retelling of King Lear? Of course not. And why not?

Because it is more important that a story be told in an interesting fashion than that it be a new tale. This is what District 9 has done; it has told a broadly familiar tale in a novel and engaging manner, moreso than have other films that deal with the same concept.
