An infestation of skunks....anyone else got this problem where you live?
Edited on Sun Oct-10-10 12:15 AM by TK421
I was just downstairs, outback talking to my landlord about a repair and one just walked up to his porch and sat there, which I thought was strange...it didn't seem skittish or anything ( and they usually are ) There are a ton of them in this area, and when I had a short stint delivering papers early in the morning a few years ago, I had several close-encounters with these guys...I was VERY close to getting sprayed by one ( it was dark, I went up a walkway to a neighbors door and all I saw was something white go up in the air....I remember backing away slowly and throwing the paper at the front door and getting out of there ) Looked like this guy here

edited to add: I love nature, and I don't have a problem with these things, but you had better not get too close to them....they also have a vicious bite ( much like a possum )

1. We have more of them than usual this fall.
I see (and smell) a LOT of them that have been hit on the roads.

A couple of nights ago, I heard a faint noise on our patio about midnight. My husband had fed the outdoor cats late. Two of the biggest skunks I have ever seen were eating cat food. The cats were all lined up about twenty feet away.

My husband shot the skunks, and he got them with one shot. But one of them sprayed in its death throes. It was way too close to the back door for comfort. We hosed everything down and used our special skunk deodorizer, but it was still terrible. When he brought the skunk carcasses to the back burn pile, he said they must have weighed ten or twelve pounds each. Yech.

4. This is the time of year for them to be out and about...
They will disappear after about a month or so. They do here in the Cascades anyway.

5. Not where I live now thank goodness
Oddly, the town I lived in just a couple miles down the road was infested with them every year and still is. The dog I had at the time got sprayed once right in the face up close. He stank for nearly six months until I discovered the amazing skunk stink be-gone spray. Most disgusting reak in the world and so strong it makes your eyes water. The dog's nickname was "Stinky" for ever after.

6. I think it's their mating season - we had several get run over in our street
tha last few weeks, usually early in the AM.

They live under porches or in the small wooded areas near our house, and ther are 'possums there, too, and lots of other critters...

10. we have a lot of them here, in the city.
for the life of me, i do not know how it is that our terriers have never been sprayed. they had quite the happy home in a dilapidated garage across the alley. they have been scarce since that was torn down.
maybe you could find out where they live.
