Need good/ thoughts/ prayers for some kittens tonight...
Edited on Sun Oct-10-10 08:06 PM by joeybee12
One of the cats I trapped for the clinic today is lactating, meaning she recently gave birth. Shit like this happens now and again because they're feral and things like that aren't noticed until they're under the anesthesia and about to have the suregry...they're feral so you've got to sedate them first thing so they don't bite/scratch/attack. Anyway, she's coming to, but I won't put her back to her colony until the morning...usually it's 48 hours, but she needs to go back asap and the morning is the earliest because the anesthesia really needs to be out of her before she goes. Tried finding the kittens this afternoon, but it's Sunday and she probably hid them in a car place that is locked and fenced with barbed wire on the top. It's hit or miss in something like this. Happened to me once before and I lucked out as all five from that cat's litter survived...just depends on how young they are...I fear they're very young. Thanks.

1. Hope they make it. One of the difficulties of an important job, I know.
But you have my appreciation for doing it.

9. Yeah, when this happens you just go, "PHUCK!"
But the guy who feeds the colony really takes care of them...he works in the industrial park so they are pretty healthy and not too skittish...mom probably delivered healthy ones, so that will help their survival. He just wasn't getting them fixed until now, though.

3. It's so sad and unfortunate that these things happen...
.
.
.
.
.
...but the GOOD that comes from what you do far outweighs
the unavoidable bad... far, FAR outweighs.
.
.
.
Vibes & strength for the kitties.
.
.
.
And hoping that YOU have truly incorporated the above.

11. Thanks...the other guys I trapped from there are all eating well
and actually being very quiet and taking it all in stride...they'll probably get released in the morning.

4. Thanks everyone--update: Dropped Mom off this morning prior to that fed
her two cans of cat food and she ate half of a third...when i opened the trap I had to push her out a bit, but when she did go, she bolted right to the area I thought she would. Hopefully in a few weeks we'll see her bring them out for food...then, of course, they'll have to get fixed too...and younger than Mom was so they don't get in trouble.

:hi:

5. Yeppers, the youngsters will need fixing, but the mom's procreating days are over!
Kudos to you for the work you are doing!!! It's the responsible solution to the issues you described in your o/p! Are you in Austin? I'm in San Antonio, and we have a hard time getting some of our citizens to get with the program!

12. I'm in Vegas...and everywhere you look you see more cats...
the guy who works there has been feeding these guys for a while, so they're well taken care of, he just hasn't been getting them fixed...he's seen the light now.

14. My bad.
Sorry, I thought I remembered you being in Austin. But yes, absolutely, the problem is everywhere. Good for you for helping this guy see the light.

15. Yeah, eventually all people come around...i've had people who are very reluctant
but once they realize how quickly their colony gets out of control, they do indeed see the light!

13. Thanks...I'm hopeful becasue the guy who feeds them feeds them well..
Mom is healthy so the kittens were probably born healthy...it's just their size at this point that's worrisome. The others will go back tomorrow after another day of rest and feeding...the males could probably go back today, but I always keep them a little longer as long as they're not freaking out and eating and pooping ok!

8. Thanks...she did run to where I think she was keeping them...
I checked arund yesterday and the place next door is a car place, perfect for hiding kittens...of course it was locked and fenced in with barbed wire since it Sunday...so unfortunately I couldn't really check it out. The guy who feeds the colony will check it out today...fingers crossed.
