This passage from "The Bell Jar" is just so insightful, and so close to home for me. |

"After Doreen Left , I wondered why I couldn't go the whole way doing what I should any more. This made me sad and tired. Then I wondered why I couldn't go the whole way doing what I shouldn't , the way Doreen did , and this made me even sadder and more tired."
I picked up the book yesterday from a small NYC book store on my way to the Bitter End on Bleecker Street.
What is surprising to me , knowing the Novel's reputation , is how funny Plath's prose is , I rarely finish a page without a chuckle or too.
Can't wait to finish this .

The Bell Jar has been known to cause depression. It's a True fact*
* Actual reason given why we weren't allowed to read Sylvia Plath in High School Lit class.

I don't think Hamlet's depressing, I think it's hilarious. It might be the best comedy of errors ever written about a solipsistic broody whiny teenage boy incapable of carrying out a simple task, his trampy mom, his psycho ex-girlfriend, her hot-headed jock brother, two manipulative over-bearing dads, a pair of backstabbing best-friends and an evil uncle. If ever there was a Shakespeare play meant to be adapted into a John Hughes movie about HS, it's Hamlet.

4. Reading the Bell Jar on the way to the Bitter End is not a good sign. |

Fortunately there are a few head shops nearby.

I never read the book. But your enthusiasm for it means it's on my list. Don't work too hard today.
