I guess "porridge" sounded too low-class to marketers!!!

Rolled oat porridge is common in England and North America. It is known as 'porridge' in Ireland, Great Britain and Australia,; in Canada and New Zealand as 'porridge' or 'oatmeal'; and in the United States as 'oatmeal'.

Oh, and Cream of Wheat was invented in North Dakota! :D

1. I am given to understand that porridge tastes much better than American oatmeal.

2. IIRC they traditionally put root plants and leftover meat in it.
It actually sounds like a pretty tasty meal.

And I like to mix them with hot water, and then eat them before they get too soggy.

4. Oatmeal is what you make porridge out of.
Americans are just efficient--why use a separate word for the final result when you aren't likely to make anything else out of it, anyway?

Besides, it's just cardboard with maple syrup spilled over it. It's not like it's worth eating, like grits or something. Why name it?

5. Oatmeal is good if you do it right.
First: COOK IT IN MILK, NOT water. I like it kinda thick. Instant is not as good as regular, but cook instant for longer than the directions say to, to soften it.

Second: add sea salt, cinnamon, brown sugar, butter and vanilla extract to taste. Stir.

Third: Pour more milk on it, and stir it again to cool it down to eating temperature. Yummy!!

8. Add raisins to that and I'll be right over!
:D

Though I skip the added milk after cooking...I like it to stay nice and thick, I just have to blow on it a lot. ;)

7. Americans know porridge is for bears...
very picky ones at that and we'd rather just avoid any contact.
