List people who portrayed themselves in movies
This past weekend I was watching "Hamlet 2" and got quite a chuckle over Elizabeth Schue portrayal of herself. Now I recall Brett Favre playing himself in "Something About Mary" and Bill Murray making a surprise cameo as Bill Murray in "Zombieland". Can you all think of other films where a real person played a fictional version of themselves?

24. Rudy Giuliani has quite an impressive filmography
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Rudy_Giuliani#Films

Biographical drama Rudy: The Rudy Giuliani Story (2003), in which he is played by James Woods.

Kevin Keating's Documentary Giuliani Time (2006).

In 2003, Giuliani made a cameo appearance as himself in the film Anger Management, starring Adam Sandler and Jack Nicholson.

Add to that any number of cameos in sitcoms set in NYC over the years. The most dangerous place to be in NYC back then was between Rudy and a camera!

42. Only about half of them.
He kept doing Top Gun over and over for too many movies, and that hurt him, but he's done some very good roles that he gets no respect for. Rain Man, The Color of Money, The Vampire Chronicles, Magnolia, Collateral, Born on the Fourth of July... He has the reputation of being an Oscar magnet, meaning his movies often get Oscar nominations or wins for co-stars. Paul Newman, Dustin Hoffman, Jamie Foxx, Jack Nicholson, Ken Watanabe, Cuba Gooding, Jr., Holly Hunter, are some.

He was originally supposed to play Edward Scissorshands, but turned the role down, so it was offered to... wait for it... Tom Hanks! Who also turned it down. Johnny Depp, the original love-em-and-dump-em bad boy got the role on the rebound. Funny thing is, Depp wanted all the roles that Cruise was getting but couldn't get them because people thought of him as a TV actor without enough range, so he kept taking the lower-budget quirky roles no one else wanted. Over time he wound up with a greater diversity of roles, so he got more respect, whereas Cruise's big roles all started to look alike, so he got less respect. Tom Hanks managed to do a little of both--he got big budget roles that were still diverse and quirky, and he went to be rich and respected. It's kind of funny to me how unplanned career moves can shape a person even in a career like superstart acting. :)

I don't get the Tom Cruise hatred, unless it's just an extension of the "he's popular so I hate him" reaction, or the fact that he usually plays blue collar characters instead of the educated elite roles. He's no worse than most other actors at playing himself, he's just more successful at it. Or was, 'ere he met Oprah's sofa.

Yeah, I'm bored at work, so I'm rambling about actors. Sorry. :)

44. I don't hate Tom Cruise.
For some reason I find him boring as hell. His facial expressions are always the same regardless of what role he plays (and I do agree he's had a few stretches). I did like him in Vanilla Sky but overall, I think he exudes a shallowness that comes across in his movies.

I find it interesting you say that Johnny Depp wanted all the roles Cruise got - which ones? I can't quite see him in Top Gun. ;-)

51. Aside from Meryl Streep and Geoffrey Rush, and sometimes Emma Thompson...
Who can you not say that about? There are few actors who can turn in a decent performance with any emotional conviction and actually change their basic emotional reactions. Even great actors like DeNiro have the same stock reactions.

Oh yeah, you can add Gary Oldman. I think. He's so good at changing his face I can't even tell if it's the same reaction each time. And Pacino, who I think is probably Oldman's spiritual father.

53. Agree with Oldman. Ralph Fiennes comes to mind....
with really good actors, there's a complexity that comes across the screen in subtle ways. It's that ability to make the character genuine to the audience.
