I bought a cheap Cabernet at the discount wine store...
$3.99 a bottle, and it wasn't bad.

But, I don't understand why the bottom half of the bottle tasted so much better than the top half.

1. The price of a bottle of wine means nothing.
Honestly, I like Boxed wine. Blush. It's so great chilled. And no, I'm not a redneck.
Weideiker (No idea if that's the spelling) is a German wine made in Arkansas that is quite inexpensive and is quite good.
And I'm a snob when it comes to food and drink, so I'm not just whistling Dixie. =)

2. I'm a Pinot Grigio wine person
We went to Trader Joe's and bought Pinot Grigio for $1.99 a bottle. It was so good we went back and bought a case. We did buy a couple bottles of red wine for the same price was excellent. I was leery buying such a cheap wine but tasted better than more expensive Pinot Grigios. I've actually have thrown expesive Pinto Grigio down the drain it was so bad. Not this one.

4. Trader Joe's sells a great Cabernet from Black Mountain called "Fat Cat".
It is awesome -- and I think it's about $5.99 a bottle.

We have some friends who own a restaurant and do a lot of catering. We introduced them to this wine and they use it for their catering jobs. My friend told me that she gets a lot of compliments on this wine.

7. you are so lucky to be able to buy wine in the grocery
Edited on Thu Oct-14-10 03:08 PM by tigereye
signed, living in the previous century in PA. There are a few places that you can buy it in the grocery, but for god's sake it's a kiosk connected with the Liquor Control Board to check and see if your face matches your driver's license, and also with a breathalyzer to make sure you aren't over the legal alcohol limit. I wish I were kidding. :eyes:

I suppose it is a step toward the future, but after having bought beer and wine in the grocery stores in other stores with no hassle, it just seems so "nanny state." It's simply embarrassing to live in a state that's so archaic about such things.

8. Oh man, what a drag that must be!
I remember visiting my sister in Utah and having to go to a government run "package store" to buy beer.

I cannot imagine having to do that every time you wanted to buy beer or wine. We can even buy hard liquor in the grocery stores in California.

9. well, we do have beer distributors here- and you can buy beer in bars and
some other places. But yeah, the state liquor store thing is a huge pain. Some day we will be free to buy alcohol wherever we want. :(

5. Remember you "taste" with your nose
So the bottom half of the bottle might have been shaken up a bit and thus releases the full flavor of the wine. Most of us make the mistake of just pouring intgo the glass and drinking right away. But that's like eating a tiny corner of a pancake before spreading the butter and syrup over the whole thing. The wine needs to be moved around in the glass before drinking.

11. My theory is that by the time you've finished the top half,
you're getting a little high and you don't notice the acid any more.

6. It probably had more time to "breathe" than the top stuff
All that pouring aerated what was left in the bottle, I'm guessing.

Aldi has a decent, cheap wine. Winking Owl, $2.99 a bottle here. I understand it's made by Gallo. The Cab and Shiraz both very decent. Merlot not bad, either. Haven't tried the whites. I've had worse for way more money.
