4. Can you ask what the deciding factor was?
I'm not trying to sound blaming -- sometimes a hiring manager will give you a reason. Not always, but sometimes.

15. figure out a way to make a wealthy man more money
it can be any business, if you can promote it, people will take care of you if you help increase their gross considerably.

12. Makes two of us.
I can't tell you how many times I've been told the same damn things, with the same damn outcome. There's always someone who is allegedly "better qualified." Upon further investigation, "better qualified" often means "former student of prospective employer", or "good buddy of prospective employer", or "friend of the person in HR who handles the applications". I had one of the former send my application to a goddamn internship opening, rather than forwarding it to the job to which I applied. I have a Masters degree and 20+ years of experience, and I sent along a cover letter specifying the position to which I was applying. The person was either a complete, fucking moron, or knew someone else who wanted the job. From what I've been told about that HR dept. by other other employees, it was likely nepotism. It's not what you know, it's who you know.

I hope we both see an end to this kind of shit soon...

22. It IS who you know
Edited on Sat Oct-16-10 08:38 PM by Dyedinthewoolliberal
insofar as to distinguish your self from the others applying. If you've not read "What color is your parachute?" that is the main premise of the book.It goes like this;
a) decide what company/firm/store/etc you want to work for
b) find out the name of the person who is the hiring decision maker. This is not the name of the HR person, they are gatekeepers.
c)Start networking until you find someone, who knows someone who knows someone and is willing to introduce you to the decision maker for that job at that company/firm/store etc.
d) once you are in front of the decision maker, you are on your own :)
Anyhow, that is a very useful book when it comes to job hunting. In the interest of full disclosure I haven't gotten a job that way, but I haven't been in that situation yet............. :toast:

14. Ask them for their feedback
something like:

"Thanks for taking the time to meet with me on (day). I really appreciate meeting you and hopefully we can reach a mutually beneficial agreement.

However, I find criticism and advice from seasoned professionals very instructive, so could I please ask for your honest assessment of my interviewing skills? Can you see anything I am missing?

Thanks again for the consideration. Please contact me directly if there is anything I can do for you."

the motto was the first step in getting a new job is looking for one ....
mostly cuz everyone complained but no one did anything about it .... but I kept trying ... I knew
I had something else out there ... I just had to keep plugging away .. 10 years later I got it ...
and at age 62 I can collect partial retirement from the state .... :D

19. Go through the yellow pages of your telephone book and write down
the names of places where you want to work. Call them all and get the addresses (don't tell them why you are calling). Write a personal cover letter to each and every place listing why you want to work there. Send all 40 letters in. Wait a few months. They may have an opening and you'll be on the top of the list for an interview. It has worked for me a few times. You only need one organization or corporation to ask you in for an interview. It is all about getting your resume into that hidden job market where there is much less competition. Good luck!

21. Some of these positions? They've told me I'm over-qualified for it..
Edited on Sat Oct-16-10 08:49 PM by TK421
Well...hire me on and pay me what you think that person would have made, otherwise...why the fuck would I be applying for it anyways?

edited to add: these interviewers are a bunch of fucking morons! they ask the dumbest questions and you just find yourself looking at them like WTF?

edited to add again: I had an interview for BJ's warehouse..an over-night position that they told me would require me to unload "The Product" and make sure "The Product" made it to the floor so it could get stocked, scanned, tagged, whatever...this "interviewer" asked me if I liked sports....

I said "No, not particularly...to which he replied with a somewhat disapproving-looking face, like he wasn't used to someone not liking sports or something...what do they do in this position, play basketball between breaks or something? I was told this was taking "product" off the truck, unloading it, amid getting it out on the sales floor...and taking care of all the garbage in the store..this job sounded like absolute bullshit to me....I HATE this store..tne whole feel of it...I FUCKING HATE BJ'S ( but not the sexual kind...those are still good with me )
