The spelling crowd got a hold of me tonight in GD
Edited on Sun Oct-17-10 08:03 PM by Stuart G
I really can't spell very well.
I got "loosers' mixed up with "loser" in while I was using a sports comparison to politics.

I will give you a link in a moment..so we can share the fun..I can take it..Us poor spellers have to..

this has been moved to "sports" forum to avoid the pile on..

Question..Is there anyone else around that has an issue with spelling?

4. I use Chrome and firefox
so spelling is not an issue. Grammar is though. I however do not care, as long as people understand what I am saying I am happy.

10. I have been cracking up with all the people and their "correct" spelling
Much of the last several months I have been transcribing old documents - wills, letters, deeds, etc. Spelling is very creative in most of those, even their own names can be spelled in various ways. One ancestor, who was well educated for the times, spelled his own name four different ways in one document!

The most fun was the 1832 letter from a man who lived in Lincolshire. He dropped and added 'H's in writing the same way he probably did while speaking. "Is" = "his"; "has" = "as"; "we" = "whe". He must have been well educated - the longer words were more likely to be spelled the way we expect today, though there are some oddities.

Even old newspaper articles have innovative spelling included. Spelling and grammar were not 'standardized' until sometime in the mid 1800s and English has always been a problem. According to a lecture I once heard, when dictionary writers decided to arrive at 'correct' spelling, they did not stick to one part of the British Isles. And every shire had its own variations - that is why the you can have 'plow' and 'bough', 'tough' and 'stuff', and so forth.

Even the Merriam Webster folk had to conceded that "correct" spelling and usage are a moving target. While the philosophy of the edition that came out in the 1930s was to rank by correctness, they changed and the more recent edition released in the 70s ranked by most common usage, with a slight nod to correctness preferred.

I wonder if the insistence on being 'right' in spelling will be looked back on as a quaint notion someday!

12. You're not the first football fan who can't spell
Seriously though, I ignore those people. I find that when people have nothing to say they start attacking your grammar, or use of a word.

13. Yup.
I have two problems with spelling: My eyesight is circling the drain and I had the bad luck to be taught the phonetic method - sound out.

Ridiculing someone about a spelling faux pas is equivalent to ridiculing him about a stutter or accent. Did you understand the message? Yes? Then, let it go. If not, then politely ask for clarification.

Especially important on the net where not everyone's first language is English.

14. Loose and loser are both real words so spell check doesn't catch it.
That's a wrong word error not a spelling error.

My favorite pet peeve is people that use lightening instead of lightning.

Who doesn't misspell things from time to to time? Geeze! Don't let it get to you. Somebody was probably just in a grumpy mood.
