Science Fiction/Fantasy/Other movies that have nothing to do with Earth - help me list 'em.
That is, not only do they not take place on earth (like Alien), but there's not even a mention of earth (unlike Alien) or implied existence of Earth.

So, here's what I get off the top of my head after sitting here for a good five minutes sifting through all the movies I can think of:

Dune (though in the books there is reference to earth)

Star Wars

Krull

1. Well I would guess Lord of the Rings, right?
ME isn't really a parallel to Earth.

2. I think Tolkien's intent was to offer a mythology of earth (or at least England), though -
I'm no expert on that question, but I seem to remember reading that one of Tolkien's inspirations was that England (unlike many other European and other countries) had no mythological story of its beginning - the Arthurian legends are probably the closest, and those didn't go back very many years. So he wanted to make something akin to the Norse, Teutonic, Middle-eastern, Greek, Chinese, Japanese, Egyptian, Mayan, and so on myths.

8. There are some parellels, though
I remember doing a report on this back in the dark ages - mid 80s in high school. A lot of the astronomical (and other) descriptions from the books have direct correlations to real life ones (Red Borgil in the sky = Mars is one I remember)

That was a whole other planet. A planet...of apes.

Wait, Statue of Liberty? That WAS Earth! You Maniacs! You blew it up! Ah, damn you! God damn you all to hell!

6. I didn't KNOW Tim Burton made a shitty remake - what, wasn't Danny Elfman available?
Elfman and Burton are like peas and carrots (well, not really - that combination sort of sucks - Forest Gump reference).

7. Shitty doesn't even begin to describe that one. It was okay until about halfway through
and the reality dawns on the viewer that "Oh my God, the whole intent of the first movie is going to be ignored and it's gonna end on a really, irrelevant, cliche note".

And by God, it did.

11. How alien are you looking? The Princess Bride
makes no mention of earth - only the countries of Gilder & Florin.

The two el-crappo movies that bear the name "Dungeons & Dragons" are also not on earth - the original, as well as the "sequel" movie "Wrath of the Dragon God" They take place in the mythical land of Izmer or Ismer or something like that.

12. La Planète Sauvage, Gandahar, Eden Log, Pandorum
La Planète Sauvage also known as Fantastic Planet is one.

Gandahar, also known as Light Years is another. Oddly enough, they are both by the same French director, René Laloux.

I have no idea where Eden Log is set but I doubt it is Earth.

I can't remember if they mention Earth in Pandorum or not.

13. Battle Beyond the Stars...
...a '70s rip off of the Magnificent Seven which itself was a rip off of The Seven Samurai. It starred Richard "John Boy" Thomas and Robert Vaughn in the exact same role he played in Magnificent Seven.

20. Nah, they're heading back to Earth in Red Dwarf.
And in the books, Earth became the solar system's dump.
