Green Day's roadies should have gotten millions, and Green Day got the roadie pay
because clearly the only thing of artistic value in the concerts was the putting up of the scaffolding, the lighting displays, and the guys on the soundboard.

Just sat through a slew of Green Day live videos. Every song sucked.

And I found myself wondering, "Were all their fans so deep into irony that they went to these concerts, or did they really think they were being entertained?"

I hope the former, but I assume the latter.

1. The kids seem to like them
They've sold millions of records. Green Day is not really my cup of tea, either, but when I look back at some of the music I liked when I was a teenager it wasn't exactly high art.

4. Well, this goes a long way to explaining the band's complete lack of success. n/t

5. it's cuz you're an old fart, Rabrrrrrr

 Sure they aren't the Buzzcocks or all those great punk bands many of us loved, but they have some great rave-ups. And American Idiot is pretty cool, as are some of their older albums/CDs.

6. Billy Joe's incessant whining accompanying all of that unrhythmic twanging really turned me off
So, I'm not surprised that, besides being untalented hacks, they're cheapskate untalented hacks as well.

8. Yeah, but the roadies normally get first crack at the groupies.
"Sure, I can get you a backstage pass..."

9. Lucky groupies, since gossip has it that Billie Joe Armstrong is a member of a club...
and it's NOT the Tommy Lee/Milton Berle/David Letterman/Liam Neeson Club.

Maybe that's why he sounds so angry so often?

13. Yep.
One of those bands who, like the Red Hot Chili Peppers, is successful, but it's hard to imagine why since they've been phoning it in for at least a decade and a five spot.

And I laugh at all the "old fart", "get off my lawn" comments on this thread, as if Green Day is some fresh new band. They've been around since my senior year in high school (1987) and all of the members are three years younger than I am. At this point, they're practically classic rock in the grand scheme of things.

15. I dislike altie rock big time
(I recently tried the Smashing Pumpkins for a friend and that reinforced my opinion) but even I concede that Green Day is very very talented even if mostly their stuff is not appealing to me. I think American Idiot is a great song BTW. And I think a non talented band would have a hard time having an effing BROADWAY show made about their music...

16. I would think that combining Punk with Pop would just result in mutual annihilation.
Or, hardcore mediocrity.

While those Green Day fellows may fancy themselves having Punk roots, I don't see the ethos there.
