Your useless trivia for the day... |
|
I just used the word "mnemotic" in a reply to a post. You may know that the word "mnemotic" means, roughly, "something that jogs your memory."
But do you know where the word derives from? (Yes, I know that should be "from where the word derives," but I'd rather be readable than grammatically correct.)
It derives from the Greek goddess Mnemosyne (pronounced "nem-os-se-ne), which I thought for years was pronounced "Nem-O-Sine." Shows you what happens when you learn how to read words before you've heard them pronounced, doesn't it?

1. That stuff is always useful. |
|
Knowing where the word comes from enriches that word. Tantalizing, for instance.

2. I would have guessed it's a variation of MN-emetic... |
|
. . . ... (which translates literally to "Minnesota - brings back"). . . . It's an herbal preparation that makes any cheese that you've eaten in the last three hours repeat on you... so that even when you're out of cheese -- you're not really out of cheese. . . I know these things because I once sat next to a Minnesotan on a flight from Chicago to Dallas/Ft Worth. She told me. . . Even though the First Rule of MN-emetic Club is you don't... well, you know. . . Signed, . ... ... ... ... MiddleFinger "I'm So Midwestern I Put Mayo on My Oatmeal" Mom . . .

4. I always thought that about "paradiddle". |
|
I thought something else about it but it's too un-PC to mention.
