Poll question: What's your reaction to bald guys?
I keep running into guys who shave their heads or do the really close, skinhead cut and am curious whether it's considered fashionable these days to have that really butch, crew-cut or bald look. What do DUers think? Is it sexy?

2. Depends on the bald guy.
Some guys look great that way. Some just look like turtles.

3. Dave Barry compared them to giant thumbs.
I laughed so hard when I read that. :)

6. Purely curious
Like I said in my initial message, I see a lot of guys choosing to shave their heads. Being something of a hippy myself, my personal preference has always been for hair, and the more the better. But that's purely my personal taste, I know a lot of people have different taste and that's great, I'm just curious to know how many people are into baldness or crew cuts. I know a lot of people think Patrick Stewart is really handsome, hell, Demi Moore claimed she considered herself most beautiful when she shaved her hair for GI Jane, and of course there are those who always thought Sinead O'Connor was hot, I mean, clearly, there are people who appreciate the aesthetic of having little or no hair. I'm just curious to get a sense for a rough percentage of how many find that look attractive.

10. Remember what Al Pacino's character said about women in "Scent of a Woman"?
I feel the same about a man's appearance. Whether a man is bald & it's flattering for him, or if a man's hair is long & shaped nicely, either is fine with me.

I'm more taken by a man's personality & sense of humor. Those really stand out for me.

11. Thank you for your reply
I think you're absolutely right that any appearance has the potential to be striking, if it works for that individual. I have to confess, my personal perspective is a little jaded. For some reason, I have a strong association with buzz cuts and skinheads and military. Since I don't have very favorable associations with either skinheads or hardcore military types, and they're the people on whom I most often see young people making the conscious choice to wear little or no hair, it makes a statement to me, and not a favorable one. But of course that's silly, there are lots of people who have little or no hair and are neither skinheads nor Paris Island types. Certainly Patrick Stewart doesn't give off any of that vibe. It's just hard for me to get past the subconscious association.

7. For me it's a matter of practicality
I'm not bald, but I do have a buzz cut. I'm a trucker and it's just much easier to take care of. If you ever find yourself not having access to a shower for a couple of days, you'll know what I mean.

9. Not everyone can be a Breck girl.
I say a bald head definetly beats the Michael Bolton look (long and receding with bald spots). Shave it!

14. Oooh, yet another good point!
Watching older gentlemen trying to comb their one last remaining hair over in a desperate and futile attempt to make it look as though they weren't bald is always piteous. As someone who invests a certain amount of what little vanity I allow myself in my hair, I'm by no means without sympathy, but there comes a point where the effort at denial is more conspicuous than the hairlessness itself.

12. It think it's a Yul Brenner thing
According to legend, Mr. Brenner was not completely bald but rather had that chrome-dome thing going on. He shaved his head because he felt the cueball style made him look exotic as opposed to middle-aged.

As for me, I dig the chrome-dome. I think it's hot. The cueball, not so much.

Yul was pretty striking and he certainly didn't look anything like a skinhead or a radiation therapy patient.

17. I've spoken about my former profession way too many times here, but
I used to be a hairdresser. While I was a cosmetologist as opposed to a barber, a good 60% of my regular clients were male. One thing I learned from working on mens heads is that major natural hair loss comes far too early. Most men who are going to be "Mel Cooley" bald start losing their hair in their twenties, sometimes even before their twenties. It's not fair but most of them dealt with it gracefully.

I had a few clients who insisted that I leave a flap of longer hair so it could be combed over. As much as I wanted to try to talk them out of it, I didn't because it's their head - not mine.

The ones that were okay with their chrome-domes absolutely loved me because I knew how to give them a cut that didn't make them look like Bozo the Clown.

16. I used to assume they were skinheads but these days there is no telling
Considering how many old counterculture guys have gone bald. I prefer long hair on men, though, so I don't think of bald guys as being sexy. Mr. csziggy has a receding hairline, but he still has a nice ponytail!

20. Well, being one I think they're sexier than other men.
That might be my ego talking.

The super-short baldie-crop is actually going past in style according to my hairdresser, because many women despise that look. (Kirby would know, he's an artist...I also trust him implicitly when I say "Make me look sexy!") Right now, I'm rocking a short heavily-pomaded side-part (that does not try to comb-over or hide my "spot" with closely-cropped sides, back and temples. (Think: mini-Mohawk side-part:D) that's equal-parts business and punk-rock. I was skeptical but I keep getting hit on at first glance, which is strange for me because I'm not hot; I'm a player but it's because I'm charming, witty and a bit playfully-caddish (My spirit animal: Cary Grant.)
