The dude that played Sherlock Holmes on Masterpiece Theater last night

would make a good Mick Jagger, if somebody ever made a movie about the Rolling Stones.

ANyone else catch that show?

1. Don't get too hookd on it...there are only 3 episodes...
and one of them is an almost exact remake of
the pilot.

The guy playing Watson, was just cast
as Bilbo Baggins.....

11. Yeah, Martin Freeman is surprisingly versatile, isn't he?
Everyone recognizes him from Love Actually and The Hitchhiker's Guide to the Universe, where he played similar characters, but he's got more range than that. He should be able to handle the whole character arc Bilbo Baggins goes through.

18. Martin Freeman . . .
did a good job as Watson. I had not seen him in anything before (that I recall). I think he'll do a good job as Bilbo. I had liked James McAvoy for that role, but Freeman should be fine.

2. I watched it...
I had some reservations about Holmes being placed in modern times, but I thought he did an excellent job. I plan on watching the whole series. You are correct: he would make a good Jagger.

4. I saw your comment after I posted...
I didn't realize that there were only three episodes so far. I guess they want to use those three to entice us; and it looks like it will work, especially on me. Thank you for the information.

5. I hope they hurry up.
The show had a tremendous amount of energy to it!

It was interesting to watch the pilot and then see
the "changes" made for the 1st episode.

You kind of ask yourself "Why'd they change THAT"
for most of the little things, other changes explain
themselves.

7. I hope they hurry up, too...
I still think Jeremy Brett was the ultimate Holmes, but Mr. Cumberbatch did very well in his portrayal. I enjoyed the chemistry between Holmes and Watson.

8. Agreed about Brett.
He brought a dark sadness to Holmes.

20. I hope so.
I liked this show...paced beautifully, and, as always with British productions, beautifully acted. The only thing that felt a little creaky to me was the Sherlock Holmes-y plot device.
The "take a pill or I'll shoot you" gimmick that could have happened in 1890 just as easily. But then, even though I like this show, I've never much liked Sherlock Holmes.

24. He was in a weird BBC drama
Called "The Last Enemy" (http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/lastenemy/index.html) that I recently watched on Hulu. I agree: he's a remarkable actor.

10. I came in on the last 20 minutes last night --
Edited on Mon Oct-25-10 10:28 AM by Hell Hath No Fury
I saw Rupert Everett listed in the credits :loveya: and had to check in I was surprised at the modern setting and liked what I saw. I will make a point of trying to catch a replay. I am trying to figure where I have seen that guy before -- he looks familiar but am blanking on just where.

On edit: Aha! "Tipping the Velvet" and "Atonement" -- that is where I have seen him -- where would we be without the IMDB? :D

12. I caught the end of it during half time last night.
I hadn't planned to stop, but the cabbie actually caught my attention--I had just seen the same guy in an episode of Doctor Who (watching on Netflix). Had no idea it was a Sherlock Holmes movie, I thought they were just picking on the guy by calling him Sherlock. :)

It looked good. I watched the rest of the show instead of going back to the game, then looked it all up on the Internet. Cumberbatch has a great voice, and some pretty good acting skills, even if he plays the same Holmes almost everyone else does. When I read the books as a teenager, I always thought of Holmes as more dynamic and even flippant, more like Robert Downey played him (although maybe not that flippant), or maybe more Hugh Laurie plays him in House. The movie Holmes is always so stoic, but that's what everyone expects, I guess. Cumberbatch did a great job of capturing the obssesive danger of the character. Only the two actors and good writing and directing could make the premise of that climax scene work. I kept thinking "Oh come on, he would just walk away," but every time he stayed I believed it, anyway.

13. Forgot to watch, but it's online!
I forgot to record it last night. :-(

But I found it online today: http://www.pbs.org/wgbh/masterpiece/sherlock/watch.html

They'll keep it up til Dec 7.

:-)

I know what I'm watching tonight. Monday night is a broadcast dead zone, even on cable.

16. Sherlock is an Aspie?
Edited on Mon Oct-25-10 10:06 PM by supernova
That bit about demanding that the other police officer turn away because he annoyed Holmes. Interesting.

Overall, I think they did a great job in updating the series to today. Excellent use of laptops and cell phones. edit: Writing and delivery was very tight. Perhaps, they all watched Sorkin's work?

Instead of a heroin habit, it's nicotine patches? lol

17. Benedict Cumberpatch (great name) . . .
once played William Pitt. No, not DU's William Pitt. But William Pitt the British prime minister, in a film about the great abolitionist Wilberforce.

I saw "Sherlock" and found it engaging. It was like the regular Holmes on steroids, observing and deducing at about a tenfold rate and speed.

28. I thought it did. I played Sherlock Holmes in a production of "The Crucifer Of Blood"
about a thousand years ago. The scene where Holmes deduces so many things about Watson from his cell phone was almost word-for-word from a scene in the play in which Holmes deduces as much from Watson's pocket watch.

Here's me as Holmes, with my Watson. I'm only about average height, but our Watson was short, so that helped me look tall...

29. I thought it was excellent- had a great Dr. Who-type quality - one of the Dr.
Who writers apparently penned the episode. I was pleasantly surprised- and in some ways, I liked the Dr. Watson character better!
