George Lucas reportedly planning Star Wars sequels
George Lucas reportedly creating Star Wars sequel trilogy (that's not about the Skywalkers)

Big honking Saturday morning rumor here! According to IESB.net, George Lucas will be creating a new trilogy once the first six Star Wars movies go 3D. This echoes what Lucas did in the 1990s after the original trilogy was rereleased.

When you check the link, IESB.net may be down from a traffic surge, but here are the pertinent details:

http://io9.com/5671581/george-lucas-reported-creating-new-star-wars-sequel-trilogy-thats-not-about-the-skywalkers

I heard it's about the Binks family.

ok, just kidding.

1. Well shit. If he'd followed the original plan we would have all nine movies by now!
They were supposed to come out three years apart (beginning with the original and its release date in the late 70's. So 24 years after the first one came out we should have had episode 9 in the theaters. He said he was stopping after 4, 5, and 6 and then, of course, MONEY TALKS, so he created 1, 2, and 3 and then said that was it, no more. MONEY TALKS. I'm not sure what he plans to do with 7, 8, and 9 now, but he'll have one shot at it. If 7 sucks moose cock, the show is over.

2. I just hope
he turns the script writing over to somebody else... and the directing.

5. I've seen lots of speculation on that
Set not long after Return of the Jedi, or set hundreds of years in the future. Could go either way.

6. If he was...to ..uh...not be involved....for some reason...then it might not suck.
Still hoping the TV series won't blow, there are plenty of storylines from the novels that could work even without the Skywalker clan but who knows. I'll wait to see, Episode I turned me against him so whatever.

7. That was his original plan back in the late 70s.
I remember talking about that in high school and at a local sci-fi convention (yeah, I was that guy). He planned three trilogies after Star Wars rocked the world. The second was a prequel, the third a sequel. The rumor back then was that the third trilogy would be about the children of Luke and... you got it, Leia.

8. What I remember from way back then
was that Star Wars (Episode IV - A New Hope) was re-released in 1978 with Episode IV - A New Hope tagged onto it. I would swear it was not initially released with "Episode IV" attached to the words that scrolled across the screen to start the movie.

Of course, I was 10 1/2 in May of 1977 and 11 /12 in May of 1988... so, my memory could be wrong.

13. That is right.
The original was meant to be a stand-alone movie, but when it became the greatest selling movie of all time and dominated pop culture for years, Lucas came up with the idea for the trilogy, then the prequels. I'm not sure when he pasted the "Episode IV" on the film, but it was not there for the original.

Lucas gets bashed unfairly over all that. He really is all about the story he's telling, not about trying to squeeze more money out of the franchise. i have no doubt that he likes the money and does what he can to make more of it, but he's a writer at heart, and is always dreaming up new stories. He had several films planned after "Willow," but it bombed, so he just let the story run through novels and comics instead.

37. I'm frankly stunned that you're so quick to forgive Lucas
One of the most criminally excessive and undisciplined film-makers in the industry. I would have expected you to blast him for his amateurish direction or pitiful dialogue writing.

Every defense I've ever heard of Lucas' crappy writing (even by Lucas himself) has amounted to "that's how Lucas wants to do it."

9. Dear Mr. Lucas, I have a small suggestion.
Having created the original SW franchise, you have becomes somewhat of a film legend. As a result, no one can exchange ideas with you critically person-to-person because your larger-than-life mystic is intimidating. I stongly suggest, therefore, that you hand over the creative process to new writers.

10. Okay, how's this...
With the death of the Emperor, Leia takes over the reigns to the empire and restores a modicum of rule-of-law. Internal divisions start tearing the place apart and she must turn toward a new generation, perhaps her offspring or Luke's, to put things right. You can even use the same actors. The fact that they are so much older now illustrates the passage of time. Luke can be the head of a reconstituted Jedi council. Lando can be some bureaucrat. Solo can be a burn-out because peace is hard on the true warrior. Well, Chewy was in the prequels, so he can be a throw rug.

14. Oh, God no...
Well, that makes all of the books and comics and video games, you know, what was once called the Official continuation of the saga, even more worthless. George... just take your pool of money and retire to an island somewhere and let your company work on Star Wars. They've done better than you have, that's for damn sure.

16. If he'd let the writers at Bioware do it I'd be more than happy
Knights of the Old Republic was the best thing to happen to Star Wars since the original trilogy (though a case could be made for the Heir to the Empire trilogy of novels).

23. It's pretty amazing
A great story, first and foremost, though the gameplay can get frustrating if you're not used to CRPGs. But you're a D&Der if I recall so the format should be familiar to you at least.

It came out for PC and original Xbox and it's pretty cheap these days. KotOR 2 was not nearly as good, but the first one is gold.

25. Have you seen
The KOTOR2 restoration project?

Some dedicated & enterprising modders have created a KOTOR2 mod that fixes a number of a bugs left by Obsidian. The storyline makes a lot more sense and they've managed to restore a lot of the content that was cut out of the game on release.

A similar thing was done with Neverwinter Nights 2, another buggy and botched Obsidian sequel to an amazing Bioware game. Am I sensing a theme here...?

Got to give him credit for that. I guess.

I value Lucas for his contribution (money) to the technology of film making. Otherwise, his career has been somewhat underwhelming.

I mean, c'mon now, Lucas is brilliant in a lot of ways, and has made an excellent living as an innovator, film-maker and marketer. He's not Kurosawa, but I think he deserves a bit more credit than he is getting.
