what I brought back from my vacation, a paint coyote
OK I brought back a bunch of stuff - staples like Mennonite cheese and tequila, plus a cool Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe pillow and some gaudy oilcloth for my yard tables, but the big surprise (hat tip to Gidney N Cloyd for closest guess) was a little corriente street dog.

We have given her a rather pretentious name to incorporate a change and several inside jokes. Meet Bessie Lupita Greta ___ (my last name) de Chihuahua, AKA Lupe:

Her highness on the guest bed

Her highness looking a little guilty when the actual guest walked into the room

Not as good as the hooker you keep promising me and failing
to follow through with... but very cool nonetheless.

9. Dumbest horse I ever had.....
was a paint. A paint with a cheese doodle addiction (my daughter's fault). I could always tell when she had been sneaking 'Ludie Mae' cheese doodles.....the horse would have a bright orange clown grin.

Awesomely precious pup!

16. aww, thanks Peggy
she kind of did that to me too! it was a fast last second decision - she was one of 4 street dogs that some freinds had rescued over the last few years and when we stopped by to say good-bye on our way out of town, she kind of took to me and Emi said "you want her?" and I thought for a second and said "Why not? sure!"

so we ran one other errand and came back and got her, her dish, leash, and pink blanket. Put her in the (rental!) car and three hours later crossed the border - they never even ASKED about her - pays to travel with a German who has odd paperwork to distract the officials:rofl:

I like that little "yoda ears" gesture in the third picture. Does she do that when she's guilty/scared?

17. oh she has ALL the human appeasement/manipulation skills
those little street dogs have to know that or they are selected against VERY fast...they are actually pretty interesting from a quasi-evolutionary perspective. Smart, perfectly "submissive" in a way that really makes them attractive as pets and hardy - god, she has drug ALL MANNER of odd detritis into the yard to chew up and eat and I haven't seen a speck of "illness" - although she has already learned to crap outside of the yard were the other dogs go or out on our walks.

18. it was different, but really good in all ways
a good friend is probably losing (giving up actually) a health battle so a lot of time was spent visiting with him, trying to encourage him to continue his life if he wishes and trying to convince him there were good reasons for doing so, projects he could still undertake that might make hanging around longer worthwhile.

Sad but kind of fulfilling. We didn't leave out a little fun, but it wasn't one of our usual adventures, for sure.

28. I'm sorry for your friend, babe.
Sounds now like it was sort of bittersweet. I hope you gave him reason to stick around awhile, if it be his choice. Serious illness can be so exhausting on the soul.

Thanx for being a good friend when someone needed it.

street smarts combined with much more "selection" pressure for both the intelligence and behavior to get fed and cared for - interesting little dog for sure.

44. I'm fairly naive about tamed coyotes.
My dog is scared of the wild ones, and there are wild ones here. But they don't look like your cute girl!

My dog is the same size as a coyote, but, he's a big cuddly, lovable wimp. He was chased off by them in a wilderness park, recently, and it took several hours to find him.

33. actually she had some,
but all the border personnel cared about was my German friend's strange paperwork* - they didn't even ask about the dog, they didn't care about the 5 bottles in the trunk despite my claim of two, they didn't seem to see or care about the limes or the sugar either.

*she overstayed a visa due to a car accident in 98, had to straighten it out at the consulate and had a new visa stapled into her passport, but it has expired (while the visa has not) and so now she carries two passports...plus she just has to be on some kind of watch because we get flagged EVERY SINGLE TIME we cross - to the point when they start with the "are you US citizens I just ask if we should pull up to the office as usual?":eyes:
