Have you ever liked a performer until you heard them sing?
Not a "copycat thread," really, but a legitimate response to Haole Girl's thread...the flipside. She asked:

"Have you ever liked a performer until you heard them sing?"

I think the flip side holds true...you discover a performer, and maybe you like their politics or their image and then they open ttheir mouth and it's "get me OUTTA here."

What do you say?

1. I don't know how I'd like a performer until I heard them sing.
I don't do stuff like check out their politics, image and background before listening to them.

2. Anthony Newley.
When I was a little kid in the 60's, I thought he was just some comic character actor. Then I caught him singing on some variety show and...well, I still thought he was a comedian! Then my Dad was all "No, son. He's serious. That's how he sings. In fact, that's what he does. He's a singer."

Oh.My.God.

3. I don't get it. How could one like a performer without being witness to their performance?
Although this is America where people decide they "like" an "artist" because of the politics or the clothing or because they're cute or some other irrelevant fuckstain dumbassery, so I suppose that, yes, there will be people who will spout long and hard about how fucking awesome a particular performer is and yet never have any idea what the performer actually does, sounds like, or creates.

4. Yep, all of the stuff you said.
I know people who are prone to that way of thinking...my freeper sister in Colorado, for instance. If some country "star" went on Fox News and started spouting freeper-isms, without singing a note, she'd go out the next day and buy one of their CDs (or order it online that same day).

5. Sometimes I can like the music a band is playing until the singer opens his mouth
For example, I think Jack White does some interesting music but I can't stand his voice so I do not like the White Stripes, for example. Silversun Pickups is another band whose music isn't bad, but I can't stand the singer's voice and therefore don't like the band.

6. are you talking about performers who are singers?
There's all kinds of performers that don't sing and don't put themselves out as singers, so I'm not getting the point here. And if they do put themselves out as singers but aren't good singers I don't understand why I would like them to begin with. I appreciate performers for what it is they perform. I'm not going to like a dancer who I think dances badly or a singer who I think sings badly, I don't understand why I would like them before seeing or hearing their performance at all. How exactly does one like a certain singer before hearing them sing? That's rather stupid.

Unless you know a performer personally you aren't going to really know what they're like since their image is nothing more than a manufactured facade to sell them, and that includes their supposed political views. It's stupid to like or dislike a performer or any celebrity you don't know personally based on their manufactured image.

7. I saw the musical "How to Succeed in Business Without Really Trying"...
Edited on Tue Oct-26-10 09:09 AM by PassingFair
when I was a kid. I was really impressed with Robert Morse,
and I thought Rudy Vallee was great in his role.

A couple of weeks later, I watched a much older movie, starring
Rudy Vallee. I though he looked and sounded silly. I said as much
to my dad, who was reading the newspaper in the living room while
I watched the movie.

He told me (from behind the paper) that Vallee had been a
top sex-symbol of his day. That the ladies went CRAZY for him.

I couldn't believe it. I said "Why, he's skinny, unattractive
and he CAN'T SING".

My dad tipped his newspaper down and said, "Yep, he's no MICK JAGGER".

8. Simple. Jessica Simpson.
She's ok when she's just singing, but if you have to watch her, I want to hold her tongue down because she moves around like she's having a seizure.

9. Billy Bob Thornton...
is a wonderful actor and writer,
but his records suck. Really really suck.
