It is open source. I started with Debian a LOOOOONNGGG time ago. It made a 386 run like a mainframe compared to a M$ machine. Open source is exactly what it says. The code comes in from all around the world. The organization putting its stamp on the "brand" is all that defines the origin and most of those are US-based now.
