No really. I took it off the shelf, where it was in perfect condition. I plugged it into its USB cable to charge it and placed it on the desk. The next morning, the screen had a single crack all the way across. I can only guess that thermal expansion from the battery heating up stressed the glass. It's clearly not a crack from an impact as that would tend to be radial if the glass was struck or have damage on the back or sides if that part hit first.

Apple had better warranty this. The 1st iPod touch I had spontaneously froze up and could not be fixed via software so it was replaced. I fucking hate the Genius Bar too. The entire concept of overtly hip youngsters passing themselves off as gifted tech experts grates on me. I've met bona fide Nobel prize winning geniuses, and none of them worked for Apple retail outlets.

Fuck Apple. I like OSX but I have no swooning, over-the-hill love for Apple products or their totalitarian approach to their devices. The only saving grace here is that the iPod was given to me for work purposes (app development) and it didn't cost me anything.

1. Weird. That sucks. My ipod touch was free as well, just got it a few weeks ago.
So far so good. My 80G ipod that I bought 4 years ago and use every single day still works great. I'm amazed that the battery life is almost as good as when it was new. I guess you get good ones and you get lemons sometimes.

2. Apple needs to start using Gorilla glass in all its handhelds....
http://www.corning.com/gorillaglass/index.aspx

I say that as a Corning shareholder but also as a Cowon J3 owner, which uses gorilla glass.

Did you have a protective coating over the glass and/or case?

3. nope no protective cover
I only use it for some work-related stuff. It basically travels from my desk to the bookshelf in the same room and back...I don't even have music loaded on it. grr.

though I agree about the genius bar. I don't go there unless I have to. Private places that are licensed by apple, or message boards, those are my first stops

In any case, though, that is goddamned weird.
