First day of new job. What should I wear?
Should I go with Corporate Casual?

Or should I delve into jeans and golf shirts?

How about sweatpants?

BTW...this is a contract job, albeit a high paying contract job, but contract nonetheless

1. My dear Taverner...
I would take a good look at what the other males in this outfit are wearing, and do my own version of that...

If I were you, that is!

Good luck!

2. Thanks - so far I can tell they wear, jeans and golf shirts
But I want to make a good impression - and would rather this go to perm than work in sales again.

I've been stabbed in the back way too many times to want to go back into that snake pit

3. Well, how about nice jeans?
I'm not familiar with jeans, but perhaps some slightly dressier/nicer ones exist?

I want you to go to perm work too!

5. Flip flops or thong sandals?
And should I shave the hinter-regions before putting on the speedo?

10. Thong sandals are for after work, I believe.
And meetings with clients, of course.

The "hinter-regions", as you so indelicately put it, may be shaved or braided, depending on personal preference.

Have a great day!

You don't want to give your new employers the impression that you're a slob.

11. I've been a Career Counselor in the past and on the first day I 've
always told people it's definitely better to be safe than sorry and "over dress" (in an appropriate manner). It sounds like that (in the environment you describe) would be a nice pair of slacks and a shirt with a collar (tucked in). I'm assuming that a tie would be inappropriate (I realize the I.T. environment is much more casual than most other kind of high end jobs). After that first day, if everyone else is wearing more casual clothing, I'd check with your direct supervisor (just to be sure) that casual clothing is okay. I've always told people that you really want to gauge the climate of that new job and dress accordingly.

20. first day, definitely dress up a bit...
khakis and a dress shirt w/o tie. Do you have a sort of casual dress shirt? I'll explain: my husband is a techie-engineer type, and has several long-sleeve, button-down dress shirts from Eddie Bauer, but they're in varying colors: a few different blues, one orange, one red, one black. They all look good with khakis. That way he's not dressed obviously different from the others, but can also easily take higher-level meetings without being totally conspicuous.

Could you do something like that? Casual, but not jeans? No golf shirts yet (if ever).

A very good friend of mine is a librarian in a big LA law firm; his 'uniform' is black jeans, a black button-down, and a dark tie. Works for him. He has to look good for any clients who might see him, but he has no desire to look like an attorney.

I think you may want to set a precedent for dressing just a bit nicer .. no jeans, or no golf shirts .. if you want this to become permanent. Not to obviously set yourself apart from the other guys, but to just look a bit more pulled-together.

You're in San Diego, right? My old home town; UCSD grad here! :hi:
