Best E-book reader? Kindle 3? Nook? Sony? |
|
It seems the Nook has a lot more titles...I think the Kindle may be of better quality from what I've read though.
Anybody have the new Kindle? Does the 3G work fine from where you are? Any other brands out there worth looking at?
What would something like a Harry Potter book cost?

1. I have a kindle account on my PC |

Amazon has a lot of free titles that you can download too. I don't know if the others offer that or not. I'm definitely thinking of getting an actual kindle soon but they upgrade them so frequently that I may buy one now and they release a better one early next year.
And just like with all the stacks and boxes of pictures that have been scanned and saved on cd's, all of my stacks of books and the fun I've always had selling and trading ones that I've read, those days will also be coming to an end soon.

2. I have the Kindle 3 and the Kindle 2 |
|
Actually, I gave the K2 to my wife, Haele. We both love them. The wireless 3G (and wifi on the K3) work great, have never had a problem with it.
The battery life for the K3 is amazing, something like a month. Much longer than the Nook. As for selection, there are only a couple of things I want that I can't get: early Steve Brust books (which he told me his publisher is working on) and Harry Potter, which isn't available in any e-book format because Rowling is an idiot.
She thinks allowing Kindle format would mean the dreaded piracy. In 5 minutes, if I wanted it, I could go get a pirated copy of the books right now.
Best sellers cost 9.99. Other books cost anywhere from free to 20 dollars. I got the complete works of HP Lovecraft for 4 dollars.

12. Oh no, there is no backlight issue with the Nook. It is e-ink which is not backlit. Unless you mean |

it's a problem for you that it is not backlit?

14. Maybe you're thinking of the NookColor - that is lcd backlit not e-ink. |
|
and the main reason I wouldn't buy it except as a 2nd device if I had lots of excess cash :-)

5. The kindle won't read epub files. |
|
epub is the standard format for the publishing industry.
With a kindle you are forced to buy books from Amazon with their proprietory format.

8. I'd reject "Kindle" and "Nook" because of their names. |
|
Kindle means starting a fire. Given the context it reminds me of book-burnings. "Nook" is that plastic thing parents stick in infants' mouths to keep them quiet.

11. I love my Nook and there are also many free books offered for it. |
|
If you have a Twitter account subscribe to Inkmesh.com for notification of free ebooks on all 3 devices.
It really depends on which features you want in an e-reader to determine which is best for you. I won't even say Nook is best because I don't own a Kindle or Sony and I wouldn't trust anyone saying theirs is best unless they also own the device they are comparing it to.
With Nook you can borrow from public libraries - Kindle you can't. But that may not matter to you. I personally haven't borrowed any books from the library so it wouldn't be a deciding factor for me.
From what I understand Kindle's notes and highlighting are better than Nook's, again something I don't care about.
I prefer the touch pad on the Nook to Kindle's keyboard.
The NookColor is LCD so it is backlit, better for reading at night without a light but not good for reading in direct sunlight. I read outside a lot so I prefer the e-ink vs lcd.
My Nook was a gift but I would have chosen it anyways because I didn't want to limit myself to the Kindle's proprietary book format. At the time I got my Nook there was sometimes a better price for books on Amazon than B&N or elsewhere. Once the publishers changed the pricing strategy in April (thanks iPad), booksellers had less room to adjust price on ebooks so there is very little price difference between booksellers for books published by the majority of the major booksellers.
good luck with you choice :-)

16. I can't compare my Kindle to any of the others since I don't have any experience with them, |
|
but I love my Kindle. I have never had any problem accessing the 3G (which is no additional charge, BTW) even when we went camping in a remote area. It holds a charge for 2-3 weeks, depending on how often I access the wireless. I find it easier to hold than a regular book and it's easy on the eyes. Being able to adjust the font size is a definite plus. The cost of the books varies, but some are even free.

the best thing about it is that with it I can check out e-books from our county's library and read them. I believe that is not possible with all of the other e-readers available.

I had access to one for a few days it is a nice device but as a reader your arms will be shaking after 10 min holding it. I can hold my nook for hours.
