Attention, "Oldies" radio stations
Billy Joel recorded more songs than "Piano Man."

The Van Morrison library contains more than "Moondance" and "Brown-Eyed Girl."

"Maggie May" is not the only song by Rod Stewart.

America did other songs besides "Horse With No Name" and "Sister Golden Hair."

"Your Mama Don't Dance" is a swell song, but Loggins and Messina did a couple of others.

Your turn, DU.

1. after midnight I listen to an oldies show out of Toronto
740 AM. They play a wide, wide range of oldies with very few interruptions.
BTW, I live in southern Iowa so it carries a LONG WAY.

3. Doesn't it drive you mad how they play the same 100 songs?
My daughter is autistic and hooked on the local oldies station (KRTH) I keep it on in the car for her but OMG what a bizarre playlist. They get stuck on some damn song and play it WAY MORE than it was played when it first came on the radio. And why why why are they always playing Louis Armstrong's "It's A Wonderful World?" Doesn't even fit the format. Don't even get me started on the "perfect blend of holiday classics" which means they throw in corny Xmas songs that you've heard a million times like every third song.

16. If they are playing "It's A Wonderful World" they may have pulled from
the sound track of "Good Morning Viet Nam." (At least I think that's the one with that song on it.)

6. Adam Carolla wrote a very angry expletive-filled rant on this
in his latest book...

He talks about it on his podcast:

scoot over to about 11:45 in, where he eviscerates the DJ from Sirius' 80's station.

7. You've summed up why I listen to the Black Eyed Peas or Bruno Mars instead of Oldies.
I've heard enough Led Zepplin to last a lifetime. Even Train singing about lipstick stains on his left side brain is better by now.

8. heh, is there a statement you are making there?
Edited on Fri Dec-03-10 04:11 AM by RandomThoughts
Because I think a single song is far more then only a single song.

Each song written is writing many song, every song has many songs in them, sometimes a different song for each listener.

Here's one that is pretty hot!!!

10. That's why I have 60 Gb of mp3 files.
I can listen to anything I want without the DJ drivel and commercials. And ESPECIALLY I don't have to listen to some gawdawful versions of Christmas songs.

12. Yeah, but sometimes I have to drive
And in that short car trip to the store or church or wherever, I can just about guarantee that I will hear at least one of the songs mentioned in the original post.

Adding to it, Simon & Garfunkel did a couple of other songs besides "Mrs. Robinson." For that matter, Paul Simon had a pretty good run of albums after 1970.

Carole King recorded albums other than "Tapestry." Speaking of women, why not try a little Phoebe Snow and Janis Ian? Joan Armatrading? And for God's sake, permanently retire "Don't Go Breakin' My Heart."

There's a little more to their catalog than "Hotel California," "Lyin' Eyes" and "Take It Easy."

is the maddening "programmer" on all these damn oldies stations all over the country.

26. Oldies is a copyrighted brand name, so please capitalize it.
But you're right, it belongs to Clear Channel. However no company executive does the programming. There's a service that they hire do that for them. If they don't allow the DJs to program, then they become more replaceable to the company and therefor can be paid less. Most Clear Channel on air personalities are part timers who barely make above minimum wage.

11. yup
How about some punk and new wave- that should qualify as oldies now. Or some imagination in general. That is why I hate most commercial radio.

Corporate programming ruined it. I put my iPod on shuffle and get radio music without inane babbling DJ's and commercials.

Here's my own "Attention Oldies Stations" for the oldie station here: I know it's after Thanksgiving and Christmas is coming up, but do you have to play only Christmas songs?

25. Why complain to the radio stations? They don't program the music.
There's a separate service that handles that for most radio station conglomerates. They stick with the same old songs because researchTM shows that audiencesTM listen to the Oldies NetworkTM chain stations for a sense of familiarity. They won't rotate more than a hundred songs lest you end up listening to a SongTM you've never heard before and start to feel ConfusedTM.
