Just found out Dungeness crabs aren't actually raised in dungeons. That ought to be on the label.

13. our season just opened in Oregon
There were some at the market today, but they were puny little things, not worth the $2.97 per pound even. I assumed that they were caught in California, 'cause the first crabs of a season are usually big fat things over two pounds, and your season is already high. I'm keeping my eye out. Mmm. Crab hash.

6. I lived on Whidbey Island and we used to go to Coronet Bay with a Coleman stove, a steamer pot...
a case of beer or two, and crab traps with either turkey legs or canned cat food. Every half-hour or so we'd pull up the traps and toss the largest male dungies in the steamer pot which was already boiling on the stove. Four or five Navy families, kids and all.

Ahhh them was the days... nothing like fresh dungeness or rock crabs, beer, good friends, and a sunny day on the docks!

And to boot; if you've ever been to Coronet Bay, which is right inside of Deception Pass, well then you've seen a little bit of heaven.

MMMM I be hungry now.

7. I used to commercial fish dungeness crabs from Bodega Bay CA, to La Push WA.
The last time I commercial or otherwise fished was off Cape Disappointment just north of Ilwaco Washington. The fear from running in and out of the Colombian River bar broke me.

In the 4 years I fished I had often been afraid for my life while on the water, but that was too much. I called my pop, and he had a bus ticket waiting across the river at the Astoria OR, Greyhound station. Tasty critters, but it's hard, cold, dangerous work getting them to the table.

12. I keep telling people at the butcher counter that the crabs come with a price...
...and that price is not just monetary, but measured in risk to fishermen and their boats and crews.

The Tillamook Bay bar has become dangerous too -- needs dredging out, I guess. Read about one death there a couple of weeks ago.

I never eat Dungeness crab without remembering the risk taken.

23. Extra i, one t. Shiitake.
And Dungeness crab is named after the Washington town of Dungeness, named after a similar town in England. They're found all up the Pacific coast, up to the Aleutian Islands, which by the way were named after a Chukchi word for "island".

Etymology is your friend. Really.
