My biggest problem with last night's The Walking Dead (SPOILERS)
Well I had several problems with it actually.

But the worst one was about how helpless these people behaved.

Has anyone seen that show called The Colony? There have been 2 seasons that I've seen, and the premise is that there's been some sort of catastrophe and society is broken and everyone is on their own, they drop a group of a dozen or so people into a vacant area and see how they will survive.

In one episode, they found the rotting carcass of a pig. Clearly they couldn't use it for food, but one of them had the idea to convert the pig into biodiesel and they rigged together a contraption to do exactly that, using very basic materials that they scavanged from the abandoned buildings around them. No high tech equipment at all! But they produced a fuel that they then were able to use to power some devices (like a boat motor, generator, etc).

Now. What if there were hundreds of thousands of such bodies just laying around rotting in the sun? AND you had this super-high-tech building with gadgets and equipment of all sorts! Plus a scientist thrown in for good measure.

But no, these people could not come up with anything to produce fuel to power the building.

Hard to believe that real-life was actually much more creative and adaptive than a graphic novel!

Plus there were other things, but that was the main one that really jumped out at me.

1. Also, zombies aren't real. I mean, duh.
If you want realistic, watch Mad Men

2. Oh don't get me started on how unrealistic Man Men is!
I love the show with a passion, but believe me, I've been paying attention to details and while I adore the sets they use, there is absolutely NO WAY they are realistic! The furnishings are much more realistic to contemporary settings that have gone with a 60s-70s retro theme, but at the time, those things were simply not in every room everywhere all the time as they are in Mad Men. Just watch any movie that was filmed during that era if you want to see what things REALLY looked like back then. Sure, one or two pieces in a room of those who were trendy, but not in EVERY apartment of EVERY secretary or bohemian living at the time, or EVERY hotel/motel room and restaurant.

So there! :D

4. The Colony is no more real life than TWD.

I've seen the Colony, and even by reality television standards, it's weak.

5. But their inventions were realistic. Things that could be done
with the materials they would be likely to find. I admire that kind of ingenuity and creativity and resourcefulness. It's certainly realistic imho. Whether or not the show itself was realistic, that's a whole other point.

6. What can theoretically be done, and what can actually be done by common people suffering deep trauma
Edited on Mon Dec-06-10 07:32 PM by Mojambo
are two different things.

The Walking Dead is about how regular people struggle to survive under an almost unimaginable, psyche shattering trauma.

The Colony is about what could possibly be done. The Walking Dead, more accurately IMHO, shows what people probably WOULD do.

8. TV isn't supposed to be realistic.
That's why we watch it, to escape from reality.

9. I felt it lacking as well
everything too predictable - too convenient.. maybe that's why all the writers except Darabont and Kirkman have been fired for next year.

14. Looks like the producers might just be trying to cover their asses
or Frank Darabont's ass to be precise. I can see one or two writers having prior commitments but ALL of them? At least three of them used to write for The Shield for 7 years and from what I read Frank Darabont was pissed that he had to re-write parts of just about every episode cause he wanted everything his way so now he wants to hire just freelance writers for next season (more $ for him too if they are just freelance writers and not exec-producers as well).

12. my problem
In episode 5, Jenner states he may blow his brains out tomorrow... yet, tomorrow in episode 6, the whole CDC was going to be imploded anyways. Why blow your brains out if that was coming?

13. I can't believe I'm going to argue this point...
..since both are TV shows.....

But as for their ingenuity prior to going to the CDC, I would imagine the aspect of having to constantly be on guard and fighting off the zombies would take priority over coming up with new inventions. Also, not to stereotype any character or archetype on the show but none of them seem like they are geniuses or even all that bright.

But once in the CDC, by the time they found out about the fuel thing it was already within 24 hours of going off. Not too much time for ingenuity.

I haven't read the books but my understanding is that things along the lines of what you are talking about come into play.

18. You have identified the reason why you should not be watching tv.
The Colony is the worst, cheapest garbage tv you can get. Try reading some books.
