"The Walking Dead" discussion - with spoilers |
|
So I couldn't sleep this am and finished off the last two episodes of "The Walking Dead."
I was impressed. I was suitably creeped out (the doorknob in the first episode was the worst thing for me). Of course there are the various you-can't-do-that about the zombies (wouldn't they rot? rigor mortis? do their immune sytems work? Why don't people just go up in buildings and drop heavy things on them? Run them over with tanks?)
I have not and will not read the comic books. So, without spoiling next season, what did everyone think?

Also, seems to be written only by men.
Gender "roles" seem archaic and strange for 2010...I get a creepy vibe from the macho crap.
Maybe that's why I read that the shitcanned the writers and have new ones working on the next season.
I hope so.

2. It'll largely be the same writers |
|
They just won't be working out of a writers room. The work will be assigned on an episode by episode basis.

3. I hope they pick up their game in the next season. |
|
The gore will lose it's "EW" effect, and then they're going to have to have real character development.
For the WOMEN, too.

10. I have a hard time with many of the "ass-kicking" female roles you see in drama |
|
Unless some 100 lb woman has magical powers, there is a very limited amount of damage they can do. The muscle and physical mass is not there. I have been hit by women boxers - serious amateurs. Until they get to about 175 lbs the punches don't hurt. A 115 lb guy can really hurt you if they catch you on the button.
So it would be a bit unrealistic to expect normal women to do hand to hand combat with the undead....that said the fact that the world has been taken over by zombies is pretty unrealistic, so one must suspend some disbelief, no?

I'd agree about the lack of character development for the women, and the gore to a certain extent. But I guess I'm easily entertained because I love it so far and can't wait for the next season. Plus, I just love zombie shit and hard-luck stories of people facing apocalyptic conditions.

Never thought about gender roles in relation to it all, I see it as an apocalyptic scenario where people are trying to survive in a world turned very upside-down. Frankly, I'm better at doing laundry than the majority of guys I know, although I can shoot too. It would be nice to see the women take up arms, though, so I can see that point.
I'm not reading the books either, mostly cause I read that Darabont is not following the plot-lines in the books very strictly, and while I'd like to know what's going to happen, and SOON, I don't want to anticipate something that's not going to happen. I think the biggest bummer about the whole series is that it'll be almost a year before we see any new episodes.

6. Gee, when Olivia stuck the 9mm in Rick's face and told him she knew the safety was off.. |

7. seems pretty good so far |
|
some colorful and/or interesting characters so far - Rick, Shane, Andrea, Glenn, Daryl. Pretty intense so far a lot of the time, but I guess that is because of the zombie apocalypse scenario going on... I was surprised that the wife-beater guy got killed, as well as Amy.
As somebody who has read what probably makes up the next 2-3 seasons of The Walking Dead comic, I will say that if you thought season 1 was intense & horrific, just wait till you see what's coming.

8. And, I keep wondering that myself |
|
why didn't the military just take a line of tanks & run over the zombies, en masse? Even if you don't kill them all, most of them will be hobbled/injured and easier to kill.

I still have to watch the season finale, but I've seen the other episodes and I enjoyed them.
The gore factor doesn't bother me at all. Reading the other comments I never thought about/noticed the gender thing until now. I'd like to see women in stronger roles next season.
I'll be watching next season.
