I went on a search for something today and found some interesting newspapers
from 1963

Some of it is political - LBJ and when Oswald was killed - pictures of John John and Caroline then ------

I saw some grocery shopping ads

Turkeys .39 lb Hams .49 lb, sweet potatoes .10lb, butter .49lb, Gr. Beef 3lbs for $1.49, Coffee 3lb can $1.49, broccoli - .29 a bunch, avocados 2/.29, Sugar, 2lbs for .29 ----prices sure have increased.

I know we make more money now but at that time those were real deals. There are no real deals anymore. Interesting to look at....... recipes there also, might post some of those in the cooking area.

1. isn't the inflation factor like 10X from 1963

so if you multiply those prices by 10 it may give an idea what today's prices would be.
I think food is one bargain going these days.
Lots less processed food back then also. You actually have to make pudding. Water came from a tap and not in a bottle.

2. The price of food was never a problem
back at that time, not like it is today. Today everything is filled with chemicals. Today there is not the farmland to produce fruits and veggies - now we have corporate farms. My aunt and also my grandparents owned farms, one was a dairy farm so we had real milk - we had fresh eggs, we picked our own apples, strawberries and other berries cherries. I remember picking and eating real peas and beans straight from my grandparents garden.

Now so few farms available - home construction and malls have taken them over.

Our salaries were lower back at that time but I never worried about the cost of food - today I worry if I can afford to feed myself. There was never a worry about food until to be honest after Bush came into office. I get upset when shopping now - everything that goes in the cart is almost over 3 or 4 dollars an item, that is not including meat.

4. wages is the kicker here
I had my first job @ then. I think I started at @ $1.50/hr. Way too many are making much lower than the $15.00 adjusted for inflation now.

3. maybe my math is bad but
the minimum wage was 1.25. Todays minimum wage is 7.25. If you multiply each of those prices by 5.8 most of them are pretty comparable to what we pay today.

With a couple of exceptions, I think.
