3. Interesting reading his list; I've only heard a song or two from three of the albums
Edited on Fri Dec-10-10 09:36 PM by Kat45
And I've never even heard of several of the artists. That said, I haven't compiled my list yet because I haven't had the time to sit and remember all that I've heard. I'm also sure there are good albums that I haven't heard. For example, I absolutely loved a couple of songs from Tom Petty's Mojo, but I haven't heard the whole album. I've also heard a couple of songs I loved from The Black Angels' album, but I have no idea if I'd like the rest of it because I'm not familiar with that band. (I learned my lesson a long time ago about buying an album based on a couple of songs.)

I would top my list with Buddy Guy's "Living Proof," which is an excellent album. I'd also include Jeff Beck's "Emotion and Commotion." I'll have to think about it further to fill out my list.

6. I really liked that Beach House record
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 08:59 PM by Mojambo
And I didn't even know Guster put out a new album this year. Need to check that out.

You might like one that topped my favorite list this year, Jukebox the Ghost's "Everything Under The Sun"

7. Yep, Beach House put out some of the most beautiful melodies of the year
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 09:01 PM by mvd
Good stuff. Thanks for the recommendation!

The Guster album isn't my absolute fave from them, but even good Guster is above most music.

18. Whoa! Teenage Fanclub had an album out this year?
And I like to think I'm on top of this stuff. That's it. Next year, I'm dividing into two people, and then I'll finally be able to keep up with music.

Anyway, here's my final, final, final list:

The National, High Violet
The Roots, How I Got Over
The New Pornographers, Together
Massive Attack, Heligoland
Big Boi, Sir Lucious Left Foot: The Son of Chico Dusty (also Honorable Mention for best title)
Janelle Monae, The Archandroid
Gorillaz, Plastic Beach
Of Montreal, False Priest
Hot Chip, One Life Stand
Grinderman, Grinderman 2

10. I'm still working out my list, but my top 3 are set.
#1 was the easiest choice I've had in years. Hard music to get into, but for those us with a taste for the extreme it's hard to find a better Cd than Deathspell Omega - Paracletus. No one gives a shit about black metal except for lunatics like me but, for those that do, topping this Cd will be hard to do, in this year or any other. Just the opening notes of this song stir emotions in me, let alone the full song proper. Experimental, adventurous music, and hands down my pick for CD of the year. Not even close this year. No other band I heard took these chances and had it pay off like this CD does. Their use of discordant notes and atonality is amazing. This Cd flirts with the almighty perfect score of 10, something I've handed out just 5 times since the 70's.

After that it's NY's Austerity Program. Reminds me big time of the 90's "AmRep" style of bands like Jesus Lizard, always a plus in my music book. The CD kicks all kinds of ass, especially for a two piece. Killer Cd, and they were great live as well! I couldn't stop listening to this CD all summer long. "Wake up in the morning with a droning in your head. Yesterday, today and then tomorrow."

And #3 was a new band for me, Disastroid. Catchier than three plagues, I can only imagine what they have lined up for this year.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VTvngntOXqc

There's about 20 more that I have to nail down, but these three stuck out from the pack. Deathspell Omega is one of the hardest bands to get into that I've ever come across, but once you buy into what they're doing the payoff is enormous. It's not just the best CD of the year, it's in the running for CD of the decade. No other band I heard matches the creativity I hear on that CD. It's not even close for me.

14. Hi, Forkboy!
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 10:44 PM by mvd
Hope you had a good holiday. Mine was nice and quiet. I think my #1 would be The Like's CD, but it would be hard to choose a top 5. I know how hard it can be to narrow down. :hi:

16. These lists things are so hard.
My top 3 is pretty solid, but I have forty other bands that I have to squeeze into the other 17 slots for a Top 20. And everything from #4 to #30 is fairly interchangeable. It was funny, the first half of this year barely had anything that that I got into, but from August onwards there was an onslaught of great music, at a pace of 3 or 4 new things per week.

My top 4 bands all put out something new this year. The Melvins (which was good), the Sun City Girls (which was older material unreleased but cool), Nomeansno, who put out an EP that was tasty but mellow, and Deathspell Omega, which dropped a bomb of a Cd on me. And, of course, there was a million other bands filling in any gaps between these ones.

Music brings me more joy than any other thing on this planet. :)

I did have a nice Holiday, and I hope you had the same. :hi:

12. Mumford & Sons-- "Sigh No More"
I'm absolutely in love with this album. It wasn't released until 2010 in the U.S., so I figure it counts. The band is up for a Grammy for best new artist (although they'll surely and unfairly lose to Justin Bieber).

13. I was
hoping to be more impressed with Beach House's third album, but didn't like it as well as their first two.

The album that would probably top my 2010 list is School of Seven Bells' second album, Disconnect From Desire. The perfect electronic dreampop sound. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nWtXttiKBzs

Best Coast's debut album, Crazy For You, would probably run a close second. They sound like the Pixies and the Breeders fell in love and got married, with the Ramones as best man and the Shangri-Las as bridesmaids. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8Sj5_WITMpA

I'm also deeply in love with Grinderman's second album, Grinderman 2, but then, I love anything Nick Cave, always and forever. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vKznZUtKntg

Jack White's wife Karen Elson's debut CD, The Ghost Who Walks, had some good moments, too. I can't say I completely love everything on it, but it's pretty good. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YmFQfgdmyzY

The Raveonettes also re-issued their 2005 album, Pretty In Black, in the UK this year with 4 extra tracks. I know it really doesn't count as a 2010 release, but I just love them, so I have to post a video. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HcqeZuDnCf0

15. I agree about Best Coast; Crazy For You is pretty good
Edited on Wed Dec-29-10 10:53 PM by mvd
It is a little repetitive but is also short, so it's not a big problem.

Already gave my top albums list - my disappointments would include new albums by:

Hole (2.5/5 stars)
Tom Petty (3/5 stars)
Sheryl Crow (2/5 stars)
Sufjan Stevens (1.5/5 stars)
Liz Phair (2/5 stars)

and the new Duran Duran sounds like a let down; not fun like before.
