introduction: new girl

Hi kids. This forum is HUGE, probably the largest forum I've ever been on. I've looked around about as much as I can look and I haven't found an "introduce yourself" thread. So I thought I'd start my own, just to say hi. If there *is* an introduction thread, could someone please point me in the right direction. And apologies in advance for missing it.

...So, anyway, hi! I'm thirtiesgirl. My username refers not to my age (sadly), but to an era - the 1930s, a period of history that I enjoy. I love the style, decor, artwork and particular American obsession with criminals from that decade. I live in Loss Angeles, work in education, and spend too much time futzing around on my computer.

Having looked around the entire forum a little, I think this might be a place for stimulating discussions about some of my interests, and just a fun place to hang out online. I'll get to posting more soon, as I've had a chance to read through some of the threads. It's going to take me some time to learn to navigate this place and get used to a different interface that's not vBulletin.

One of my favorite things that Ms. Davis ever said about her co-star and sometime rival, Joan Crawford: "Why am I so good at playing bitches? I think it's because I'm not a bitch. Not so long ago I was a newbie too, and one of the first, and best, bits of advice I got the first day I posted here was "Try to stay in the Lounge, GD will suck your soul right out of your body", or words to that effect.

Those words are so true!!

The Lounge is a refuge from the real nasty world, and people here are sweet, supportive, informative, and not least of all, funny as hell.

in which to ease into the water.

Well, I think we've all experienced some loss in our lives, or at least had to learn to deal with it, are still trying to learn to deal with it, etc. Plus, I can be kind of a miserable git at times and sometimes prefer to walk on the shady side of the path... darkness is my friend... could I be more emo, blah blah. ;) ...Anyway, point being, I sometimes look at life through a dark adapted eye and see a little romance in sadness.

Well, I hope DU sticks around for a while. I actually found this site through Google. I was looking for a place where I could engage in some feminist discussion, since most of the forums where I've hung out before (mostly music forums filled with young kids in their early 20s, and a lot of older, single guys) don't really encourage that kind of discussion. Feminism isn't the only issue I have a penchant for discussing; I could blather on about music, literature, art, philosophy, tv, shoes, clothes and hair all day (among other things). And after browsing through this forum for a bit and seeing a variety of topics being discussed, that's what inspired me to register. I'd be disappointed to just get started and then have it blink off the map.
