7. I agree
Very depressing, but beautifully written. I don't think I could watch the movie though. I'm a fan of post-apocalyptic stories/movies.

36. the movie
I was afraid to see it, but it wasn't that bad. I mean, they did succeed in making at about as disturbing as the book.
I like the book better still, and the movie didn't spoil that for me.

8. Just finished "The Company" by KJ Parker
It's dry, but has a good amount of psychological tension. Good characters who act appropriately.

Parker does a good job when she's inside their heads.

11. Just finished 'The Given Day' by Dennis Lehane
Edited on Tue Dec-14-10 02:41 PM by Richardo
Fantastic historical novel about 1920s Boston - race relations, the burgeoning labor movement (including the Boston police strike), terrorism, the Great Influenza, World War I and Babe Ruth.

Excellent book.

12. Re-reading two at the moment
Emma (Austen) and Possession (Byatt). In the middle of two mainly because Emma is in a massive doorstop of an Austen compendium, so I leave it on my bedside table and take Possession with me when I need to go to the doctor's office or wherever.

Just finished The Help, which was better than I expected (since it's a bestseller and being made into a movie and all the bad signs :P ) but still had some plot issues (certain twists were clearly telegraphed, and then it looked like they were edited out at the last minute).

17. Angel Gabriel, the Elusive English Galleon
http://www.tidewater.net/~kgal/angel.htm

The book describes the search for the remains of the ship Angel Gabriel, which sank during a hurricane in 1635 near Pemaquid Point, Maine. My ancestors the Cogswells arrived in New England on the ship's last voyage.

19. Mudbound, about black, and white, families in MS post WWI. Brilliant writing
and I want to read The Warmth of Other Suns, about the Great Migration, so this is fiction prep of a sort.

Just reread Brave New World, after a strange local high school brouhaha over the use of the word "savage". Man do we need to read that book and marvel at how we are in the grips of being controlled by pharmaceuticals and distractions.

"The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo" (not really by choice...) and "The Memory Thief". Guy at work heard I was a reader and lent me the "girl" and my mom gave me "thief". Sedaris was my choice.

The story takes place in the 12th Century around a fictional English town and monastery in the East Midlands. Wonderful book, it ends with the murder of St. Thomas Beckett.
