Poll question: Should I try online dating?
I've been mulling it over, and am considering joining a dating site tailored towards those of the nerdish persuasion.

1. Try craigslist.
Probably lots of nerds on there looking for a relationship, no offense.

4. Why not?
You're a male, so I won't be throwing myself at you. Do what you like. :-)

5. Sure!!
I know some folks who've had some great relationships develop that way, including my son, who met his current girl through an internet site. He was a little embarrassed to tell me that, but after meeting his girlfriend, I was very impressed. She's a mechanical engineer, very sweet, family-oriented, unfortunately allergic to cats (but no one is perfect). They're pretty serious, and I couldn't be happier for them.

So, yes, go for it!

7. Many people very close to me have made lasting and meaningful
connections online. It is the new normal, really.

I say go for it. You have nothing to lose, but time.

8. Go for it.
Keep in mind, though, you'll have to wade through a lot of dross before you find what you're looking for. Unless, of course, you're looking for a casual hook-up. There's lots of that to be found online.

I'm curious to know what 'nerdish' dating site you're considering using. I've used Geek2Geek, a website that advertises itself as a dating site for smart/geeky people seeking other smart/geeky people, and also SoulGeek, a website specifically for those into sci-fi, graphic novels, anime, gaming, RPGs, etc.

I did meet one great guy through Geek2Geek who seemed like a good match for me, but not before searching the site for over 3 months and getting the typical response from guys just looking for a casual hook-up, or no response at all. I will say, in comparison to other websites I've used, the number of intelligent men on Geek2Geek *was* higher, but there were plenty of unintelligent guys there, too, who could barely construct a sentence. Point being, while there were members who fit the site's description, there were plenty who didn't and who just seemed to be there because they'd discovered another dating site where they hadn't posted a profile yet.

SoulGeek was a little better, but I think because the site is still not that well known and is geared towards a very specific group of people. While I didn't find many matches on the site, 90% of the guys that I was matched with were definitely sci-fi, anime or gaming geeks. As with Geek2Geek, though, there were one or two guys I noticed on the site who really didn't share a lot of those interests and just seemed to be there because they'd discovered another dating site they hadn't used before.
