Blake Edwards died today: Do you have any reflections you want to share? |
|
I really liked some of his work, but I didn't see as many of his films as I probably should have.
When I was about five or six years old, my parents allowed me to watch "The Great Race" on TV, because it was a big deal at the time. This must have been in the late sixties or early seventies.
Then I, like many other pubescent males coming of youth in the late 70s fell head over heels for Bo Derek, and my father and I bonded over that because he took me to see Blake Edwards' movie 10, which is almost a classic.
Then came SOB, the semi-autobiographical comedy about one of Edwards filmic disaster, "Darling Lili," which at its time was an expensive flop. SOB is another really great film that runs the spectrum from slapstick comedy to poignant moments that elicit tears (especially for anyone who has worked in film).
Blake Edwards was a great director who made fascinating and courageous choices as a filmmaker, and I will miss him.

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=view_all&address=102x4661751He made my ultimate favorite movie -- Victor Victoria. It's the perfect film. Pathos, love, conflict, hilarity, music, chaos. Lots of hilarity. I adore it.

6. 'The Great Race'? Really? I didn't know that at all. |
|
I just loved that movie when I was a kid.
It's still one of my favorites.
Thanks for pointing that out.
And rest in peace, Mr. Edwards.

8. At the time the movie premiered I knew a man named Victor Victoria. |
|
It was not a good year for him. ;)
I loved every announcement of a new Edwards film because the very least of them was still worth watching IMHO.

One thing I loved about his movies - the actors looked like they were enjoying themselves! A short clip http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=JG5FO8uR6wE
