Another reason I want the holidays to be over already
Edited on Fri Dec-17-10 05:28 PM by LuckyTheDog
I work for a membership organization. One of my jobs is compiling the monthly e-newsletter.

This month, I added a quick "happy holiday" message. I included a candy cane -- which I thought was a pretty safe, secular image.

One of my superiors, however, demanded that I change it. To her, a candy cane says "Christmas" and we want to be inclusive. OK, I said, "what should I change it to?" Her response: A poinsettia.

Now, I could have told her that, in many traditions, the flowers of the poinsettia are representative of the blood of Christ. That makes the poinsettia a heck of a lot less secular than a candy cane, which represents (as far as I know), sugar. But, hey, it's Friday and I want to go home. I am making the change she requested.

1. Merry Christmas, L.D.
Put a little extra rum in your eggnog. You'll feel better.

2. I believe the correct replacement in this case is
"Happy Every-Fucking-Thing - Take Your Pick". :P

For some reason, my local newspaper feel compelled to publish a LTTE, every goddamned day, ranting about the travesty of forcing everyone to say "happy holidays". Every. Goddamned. Day. x(

6. I feel your pain.
When I work Christmas Eve this year, I am going to say "Have a great Christmas Eve." It will be Christmas Eve. And anybody who bothers me about it will just have to look on the calendar!!

7.  a lot of what people think of as Christian symbols often predate Christianity
Edited on Sun Dec-19-10 03:07 PM by tigereye

many of them are probably more "pagan" than Christian if you look at their histories.

I like saying Merry Christmas, though.

9. For Pete's sake
That's so --- okay, I got nuthin.

But I agree with the above post about how so many of the traditions that we associate with "religious" holidays are actually pagan in origin. And so freakin what? Doesn't take away from anything. Those who are observant - as I am - do ya think it really matters to a higher being?

I don't think so. The observance is what matters, IMO. Not how or what symbols are used.

Candy canes are so ubiquitous, that really surprises me that someone would take offense. What next, a war on sugarplums?
