Help me identify a wild animal that ran in front of my car when I was driving through a park in
Ottawa. At first i thought it was a fox because it had a long snout but it seemed to be too big. Next thing I noticed was a really thick tail (like a big wildcat's). What gives.

16. Sweet Jesus, I just spent most of an hour reading that thread and HOWLING!
Is this the DU of yesteryear? Is A-Schwartznegger still around? Did he turn out to be Al Franken (amazingly that was my husband's fantasy as I read him bits and pieces so he'd know why I was lying over the arm of the sofa in hysterics).

And is it was in 2004 why did post 199 have a photo of an oil-soaked bird on it? Is there really a rip in the space-time continuum?

Oscar? Is that you?

18. The thread is a DU classic
Yes, the poster--a published author--is still around and still posting here.

As for the bird pic in the old post: any change made in a sigline (or avatar, for that matter) will apply not only to a member's subsequent posts, but to past posts as well. Sorry, no rip and no time machine (though admins are reported to be working on one :) ).

28. that we did! I miss those folks.
Well, the tree is up, most of the decorating is done, I still have Christmas cards to write and I even did some baking already. (cherry-chocolate shortbread, cranberry oatmeal and peanut butter blossoms.) I still have nut breads to do, though. And most of my Christmas shopping is done with just a few things to get. So I'm actually a bit ahead of schedule for a change.

Thank goodness for Amazon.

How about you? :pals:

29. You've been busy!
I don't do much cooking or baking, to be honest. But I've got all the decorating done, and the shopping is pretty much finished (other than some assorted stocking stuffer things). Now I've got to get everything wrapped and figure out what the menu is going to be on Saturday. I'm thinking ham along with a salmon filet + the usual side dishes. I'm off between the holidays so I'm really looking forward to resting up and
drinking a ton of wine.

Have a nice holiday, hon! :hi:

33. salmon! Nice idea. We were talking about that too, or maybe paella.
We don't really eat ham, and usually have veggie lasagna Christmas Eve. But my folks aren't coming to the big X-mas Eve do this year due to health issues, so we can make something a bit more adventurous that night, I think. Then we will go out to their house X-mas Day.

I haven't been working as much this month, so it was really nice to have time to actually enjoy holiday prep. Enjoy your time off, holidays, wine consumption and time with the family!

6. It was too far down the road from me for me to see its color. I just saw its size and
a few shapes. But it definitely was wild...it just moved like a wild animal.

I know they like northern-woodsy type places.

They're huge weasels and they're FIERCE.

3. Chupacabra?
A long snout like a fox and a thick tail - possibly a coyote. They are everywhere.

7. I could be a coyote. But it didn't have a shaggy tail. It was a thick long one with short hair.

8. Pumas have tails like that, but they have short snouts.
So it's probably a chupacabra.

14. If you were closer to Florida, I'd have an explanation for that
This past year a lot of the wild canines have had bad cases of mange. The last time I saw a fox, it was growing back its coat. Instead of being longish hair, it looked short and plushy, kind of like a domestic cat's coat. The coyote I saw the other day had a thick looking tail, but I suspect its hair was growing back, too.

And they do not respect humans or their possessions. Just look at the American Southwest Indian legends of the Trickster!

Wolverines are pretty clever, but they've been known to be captured without injuring them:

30. There was a fox in my backyard the other day!
I mean I'm in a busy city too, it was exciting! I was surprised how big he was, he was a little bigger than I thought a fox would be.
