Can you take wine in checked luggage on an airplane? |
|
There's nothing against it on Southwest's website, and nothing aganist it on TSA. I should call the airline, but I don't want to be put on hold for 30 minutes. I've done it in the past, but with all the terra these days, they might have chanegd the rules and not updated anything. Has anyone had recent experience with this? Thanks!

1. I'd guess you can. I put liquor in checked baggage. |
|
In fact, coming back from elsewhere, I got some booze at the duty-free shop after I went through security, so it was in my carry-on. We were all instructed that after clearing customs in the U.S., we had to move bottles from carry-on to checked baggage before proceeding to the next flight.

2. I say do it, but be okay with the possibility it could be confiscated... |
|
And cushion it very, very well. I've had friends who've had bottles break in checked luggage.
Happy Holidays, joeybee12. I'm looking forward to that epic 30,000 post.

3. I used to take wine and liquor all the time, but I've only flown once since the 9-11 stupidity. |
|
I'm not even sure you can pack underwear in checked luggage anymore. None of this "security" bullshit has done anything to stop an attack. It is all just to make the "OOOH, OOOH, I'm afraid of TERRISTS ATTACKIN' AMURKA!" idiots think they are being protected and to pump as much money as possible into GOP darling companies like the one Chertoff owns.

4. Only high alcohol content stuff |
|
In hot conditions ( could lead to spontaneous combustion) is disallowed. I lost a bottle of high proof rum that way. My other rum was okay-wine is fine. As someone said, cushion it well.

5. Yes, you can. My son's a winemaker and though he hates the thought |
|
he says it's fine for wine you're going to drink now and not illegal or outside regulations or whatever. Have it packed really really well, because this time of year especially they tend to huck those bags and boxes hard. But we're taking some of last year's vintage to the relatives that way. Cheers!

6. yes you can, but be aware glass is heavy and it may put your luggage |
|
over the new lower weight restrictions.
bubble wrap if you have it, or roll it up in some clothes and try to center in your bag

flying southwest, i am going to assume you are flying domestic, so no worries at all abt customs declarations etc
most important thing to do is wrap the wine well, a lot of people use (clean) knee socks and bubble wrap
i no longer carry red wine, but i never had any breakage when i did so, it's all in the wrap
the problem w. wine these days is you can't carry on a bottle of wine, which i used to prefer to do if i had only one or two bottles, so i could keep an eye on them
checking the wine, no worries...if you're flying internationally, you should declare it of course but it isn't a big deal even so...
these days i usu. -- only put white wine/ vodka in my checked bag but (knock on wood!) they haven't broken a bottle yet, i wish the same luck to you
