I love how new music can come into our lives!
Yesterday afternoon, I had to wait 30 minutes outside the tiny little place in Locarno where I buy loose tea -- the shop is owned by a really cool Canadian guy who has excellent tea and doesn't treat me like crap for speaking mainly English, German and very poor Italian here in an Italian-speaking state.

When I finally got in (the place is REALLY tiny) I was struck by the music playing on CD. If you like alt bluegrass/blues, maybe a fan of John Prine, OCMC for instance you might like this band. Ladies and gentlemen of The Lounge, courtesy of my favorite purveyor of loose tea, The Devil Makes Three performing:

The Devil Makes Three

With a slightly punky perspective on vintage American blues, The Devil Makes Three is a breath of fresh musical air on its eponymous Milan debut. Laced with elements of ragtime, country, folk, and rockabilly, the critically praised, drummerless trio brings forth a genuine approach to acoustic music that is deeply steeped in rhythm. “The rhythm is what our band is about... we write with rhythm and dancing in mind.” The DMT’s infectious amalgam of styles talks the talk and it walks the walk right out of the starting gate. From the outfit’s badass, backporch blues ode “Ten Feet Tall” to “Shades,” a wry look at barstool hugging daytime drunks, Pete, Lucia, and Cooper create music that is pleasingly dissimilar to most other bands in modern music.

3. It's a deal !!

I can't get to the site, but are they Italian? That makes it even more awesome if they're not actually Americans, playing American music. (Speaking of which, The Blasters 'American Music' has been in heavy rotation on my truck CD player for some reason lately.)

23. The Blasters are great!

Yeah, the folks in the OP sounded American to my ears. They remind me of the Squirrel Nut Zippers- fun, upbeat and danceable as well.

4. You might like Bela Fleck (and the Flecktones). He takes the banjo places it's never been.

A kind of bluegrass/jazz fusion.

Where else are you going to see this kind of instrumentation: banjo, bassoon,
steel drums?
.

.
Plus this piece showcases my favorite bass player ever -- Victor Wooten (search
on YouTube for his "Classical Thump" -- jaw-dropping bass work).

8. Not new to me, but you might like THESE folks, too -- The Asylum Street Spankers.
.
.
.
.
.
On their "farewell tour" right now (played here in Tucson a week or two
ago but I couldn't go).
.
I was doing some prep work for my show at the radio station many
years ago when they came in for an interview/performance to promote
their show that night.
.
One of the most fun, most energetic, most playful, and most creative
bands I have ever experienced. While waiting for their interview, they
were bouncing new licks and lyrics and songs off each other -- a JOY
to watch and listen to... even in their "down" time.
.
.
.
I believe she's playing... oh, what's that little teeny-tiny guitar-like
thingy called?

15. I've bought cd's a few times after hearing songs played in stores.
When I was in my late teens I bought Bob Dylan/The Band's "After the Food" after hearing their version of "Like a Rolling Stone...

David Gray's "Greatest Hits" because of "Babylon"...

& Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" because of "You Know That I'm No Good".

Thanks for the links -- I'll check them out. :)

22. any woman who can play upright bass gets my vote!
Edited on Wed Dec-22-10 09:40 PM by tigereye
NIce! I like em. They remind me of some 90s bands! Have a funny feeling they will be "going places!"

Speaking of upright bass, one of my faves is a psychobilly band called the Horrorpops. The singer plays amazing upright bass.

:hi: Hope you and CMW have a lovely holiday, Heidi! :toast:
