Weirdest Christmas gift?
Edited on Sat Dec-25-10 04:05 PM by proud2BlibKansan
I had a friend in college whose family gave each other canned goods for Christmas. They would wrap cans up and put them under the tree. Green beans, soup, canned fruit. Beautiful packages.

I thought at first they were going to donate this food to a pantry or homeless shelter. But no, they kept it and I suppose they ate it.

Always makes me laugh every year. I went to this friend's wedding and sat there wondering which of the guests were family members who gave canned goods as gifts at Christmas.

What's the weirdest gift you can think of?

2. My family has produced some jaw-droppers but my all time favorite was...
this jacket my stepfather got me when I was working in a lumber yard. After the Army and before I went back to school.

It was a bright shiny maroon (if that is possible). It was below the ass in length, for warmth. It was meant to resemble a down jacket but this was probably one of the early Chinese entries into US clothes making (1993). The worst part that as ugly as it was it had at least a 1/4 inch of clear plastic covering it. It was like a raspberry popsicle dipped in polyethalene or something.

My stepfather thought it was the greatest thing ever. "It will keep you warm and dry", he said. Yes it would also have gotten me ragged out endless if I ever wore it once in the yard.

Well he meant well by it. I gave it to Goodwill.

3. Tacky Jesus--a "portrait" of Jesus with the eyes that follow you around
We received it as a Christmas gift many years ago from my in-laws, who were devout Catholics. It was so tacky, we literally rolled on the floor laughing so hard we cried, and it took a long time to stop laughing.

Of course, there was only one place for such a gift--the attic. But whenever the in-laws came from out-of-state to visit, we had to hang our Tacky Jesus in the living room. The trick was that we had to hang it a week before the visit because it took that long before we were able to walk by it without breaking into paroxysms of laughter and tears.

My reason for dubbing it 'Tacky Jesus' should be self-explanatory.

8. This year? Japanese fabric toilet seat cover with Jinglish instructions
Not a cover for the lid, but a fabric cover for the part that's sat upon when it's in use. Yeah. It was not given as a "real" gift, but it's one of my favorites!

10. An unfinished, hot pink, home-crocheted, scratchy mohair turtleneck tunic sweater....
several sizes too large.

It was obviously a sweater she was crocheting for herself, and just grabbed it out of her knitting basket and wrapped it up as a cheap gift.

I showed it to my family, and tried it on for them. We all laughed so hard we almost peed in our pants.

11. I have an incredibly hideous relish tray that my mother
gave me a few years ago. It is a large Christmas tree, and I do mean large. The thing is about two feet long and heavy. It is not a plain Christmas tree. It has a star on top and many painted on ornaments and garland. All the decorations are raised. The tree has gifts under it, too. And there is a large star near the bottom of the tree. It is a receptacle for the dip.

This hideous relish tray has become a family joke. We use this thing every Christmas. I used to threaten my grown children with the relish tray. I would tell them that if they were not nice to me I would leave it to them in my will. However, my son's SO loves the thing. She thinks it is awesome. I will make sure she inherits the tacky thing.
