3. Which I am staying away from. |

Learning disability. I never passed 8th grade algebra, despite taking it 3 times. Went to a small private liberal arts college on the strength of my writing samples, and only graduated because a tutor held my hand through Remedial Freshman Math--twice.
I'm 41 and my math skills are on a 5th grade level. I need a calculator to add any 3-digit figures, much less balance my checkbook. I still cannot do long division. I'm kind of functionally illiterate (with numbers) and it's not that I haven't had a good education. I have. My brain just DOES NOT work that way.
But I HAVE had a good career as an essayist and journalist, back when writers still got paid, and I have been able to use my skills with language in other ways since getting laid off from the paper.
I'm not saying it's not important or worthwhile. I'm just saying that it's possible to make a good life without it, because lord knows I've had to. What is wrong with working with the talents kids have, rather than beating them up for the ones they don't?

Like you I've managed to muddle through life being math challenged. I figured if I can balance my check book, I'm OK.
I'm 68. I suspect that part of the problem is back in the day girls were short changed in math because of the myth we don't have the ability.
Agree. Beating kids up because they may lack certain abilities is self fulfilling. They hear it enough that they don't have what it takes, after awhile they start to believe it.

If I had any money left, I'd not only apply for jobs at popcorn firms, I'd invest in them as well.
